Computer technology has become the new reality in the health care industry. They offer tools that help medical personnel to cope with the complexity and efficiency required in the work areas. It is a flawed assumption that the adoption of computer technology robs health care situations of important qualities. No one can deny that the use of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) makes some of the interaction skills of the medical personnel using them irrelevant to the process of understanding the needs of the patients and care options open to them. In many ways, the use of computer systems frees up medical personnel from the drudgery of repetitive activities thus allowing more effort and time to be available for the more personal skills to be expressed, such as bedside assessment and communication.
