Worldview and nursing process personal statement
Part 1. Describe your personal worldview, including the religious, spiritual, and cultural elements that you think most influence your personal philosophy of practice and attitude towards patient care.
I understand that the concept of worldview is the framework that individuals use to set their reality while making sense of their life and world. In fact, it is closely linked to ethical beliefs and actions while integrating fundamental cultural, spiritual and religious principles and elements to develop consistent and meaningful responses that the challenges and opportunities that occur in life (Newton, 2015). My personal worldview is centered on Christian expectations. I believe that I was created by God to manifest his love and service for the world. In addition, I believe that God is the Supreme Being who is above all other beings. Also, I believe that God is the only absolute and every other being was created or willed into being by God, continuing to exist at God’s pleasure and mercy. As such, God’s purity and creativity are the absolute truths. This implies that humans and every existence on earth were created by God, and that they continue to live at God’s mercy and pleasure. Addition, I believe that every creation has a purpose ordained by God and that God’s judgment (to determine fair rewards in paradise) is eminent based on how well the ordained purpose is performed (Igboin, 2015). The Bible has clear instructions from God on how humans should conduct themselves. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20: 1-17) offers these instructions of expectations in a list format. Given that humans are God’s creation, then is it not difficult to accept that instructions from God as presented in the Bible should be diligently followed. Given this awareness, I am inclined towards the biblical worldview that identifies God as the Supreme Being and humans as a creation that lives at the mercy and pleasure of God. As a Christian, I look to God as an omniscient Being that is always right and is incapable of making mistakes. This implies that God’s instructions presented in the Bible are right and should be accepted as the absolute truth. I have accepted the Bible as the foundation of my existence and actions. Although I subscribe to the Christian perspective of the world, I must acknowledge that I am also influenced by my interactions with the environment to include media, people and other cultural elements. In fact, my interactions with the environment have not always aligned with my Christian perspective thereby creating the basis for my ethical dilemmas. For instance, I am inclined to follow the existing legislation before observing the Bible should the two perspectives clash to create an ethical dilemma. It is this worldview that guides my nursing practice and attitudes towards patient care, relying on the Christian perspective when there are no ethical dilemmas, and the existing ethical standards and principles when dilemmas exist.
Part 2. Choose a specific nursing theory that is most in line with your personal philosophy of practice and approach to patient care and discuss the similarities.
I perceive Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as the nursing theory that best aligns with my personal philosophy of practice and approach to patient care. The theory is based on the idea that nursing practice should be based on the principles of concern and kindness towards others. This is especially true for patients who seek care having acknowledged that they lack the skills, knowledge and competence to render professional health care unto themselves. For such patients, nurses can be the difference between whether or not they receive professional primary health care. Similar to the theory, I believe in the ten curative factors. The first factor is that a nurse must embrace patients and provide the required care through acting in kindness and altruistic objectives. The second factor is that nurses should provide the required and necessary care, and inspire patients to actively seek good health and wellness. The third factor is that nurses should nature caring, trusting and helping relationships among stakeholders within the health care environment (Black, 2016; Butts & Karen, 2018). The fourth factor is that nurses should respect the opinions and beliefs of others, especially in the face of diversity when values differ such that what is important for one person is not necessarily important for another person. The fifth factor is being forgiving and accepting both positive and negative feedback while authentically listening. The sixth factor is being involved in evidence-based practice through integrating the most current evidence in decision-making. The seventh factor is pursuing a balance between personal needs and the needs of other stakeholders. The eighth factor is co-creating a healing environment that balances physical and spiritual wellbeing so that human dignity is respected. The ninth factor is ministering to the basic spiritual, physical and emotional needs of patients. The final factor is being open to possibility of mystery and miracles that exceed the current realm of science since our understanding of the environment is still limited (Black, 2016; Butts & Karen, 2018).
Part 3. Explain how the nursing theory reinforces your approach to care. Include in your explanation a specific example of a past or current practice and how your worldview and the nursing theory could assist you in resolving this issue.
Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring reinforces my approach to care. In fact, it aligns with my personal worldview through acknowledging that science is limited and that the existence of God cannot be disapproved. The theory presents the awareness that humans are a unique existence that cannot be treated as objects since they cannot be separated from the concepts of self, other and nature. Through this awareness, it justifiably concedes that nursing is a concept that emphasizes interpersonal processes between patients and nurses (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Prior to reading on the theory, I have always struggled with the practice of abortion, especially in the face of Christian ideals that all life is sacred and that God is aware of every one of use. According to my understanding of the Bible, abortion is an opposition to God. However, the Theory of Human Caring has helped me in resolving the issue and accepting that there are special circumstances when abortion is justified. This is particularly so when the infant’s quality of life is compromised and the mother’s continued life is threatened. In such as case, abortion is perceived as saving a life rather than taking a life (Kaakinen et al., 2015).

Part 4. Finally, explain how your worldview and the nursing theory will assist you in further developing your future practice.
My worldview and the Theory of Human Caring will help me in further developing my future practice. In fact, they will help me to be emotionally sensitive towards the demands and stresses associated with the practice environment, and have a caring attitude. This will allow me to potentiate my capabilities and regenerate life energies so that I am less stressed by the professional demands. This is important for my continued practice so that I do not burnout (Cherry & Jacobs, 2013). In addition, my worldview and the theory will help prioritize the different personal and professional objectives so that I identify what is important with regards to focusing on patients’ wellbeing and health, and understanding that I can only do this if I am healthy and in the right frame of mind (Heinrichs, Oser & Lovat, 2013). Overall, my worldview and the nursing theory will aid me in having the patience and will to continue providing best possible required nursing care without burning out.
