My name is Brittany Huyck and I have decided to obtain mymaster’sdegree as an Acute-Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner at Walden University. I am thoroughly looking forward to this journey and hope to uphold the Walden University mission and values.  My background consists of working on the Interventional Cardiac Unit, which includesSTEMI/NSTEMI patients, post-cardiac catherization patients, pacemaker/AICD patients, and other critical cardiac patients.  This position has allowed me to develop my critical thinking skills, which I know I will be consistently utilizingduring my journey at Walden University becoming a nurse practitioner.  Walden University’s vision coincides directly with the vision I have for myself asa healthcare provider because I intend to utilize the lessons I will acquire during my tenureat this university in order to promote societal change(Walden University, 2020).  I also intend to promote this societal change in accordance with Walden University’s mission by utilizing my degree asa way of reaching the deepest depths of society and aiding in the promotion of their healthcare needs.  I aspire to bring about positive social change in my community in order to promote the growth and health of those around me, which is the main reason I desire to become a nurse practitioner. As outlined in the “university outcomes”,itWalden University’s desire that those who receive their degree from their establishment implements an ethical and inclusive practice when it comes to healthcare (Walden University, 2020).  This aligns exactly with how I willapproachmy nursing so that all may be awarded the same opportunity to be cared for equally amongst one another, which is essential to the promotion ofa community’s healthcare.  The beauty of nursing is that it is a constant learning process, such as outlined inWalden University’s “university outcomes” and allows me to constantly develop as a health practitioner in order to better my society and promote positive social change(Walden University, 2020).

Thank you, xxxx, for your post. Mental health is an issue to address more, and it is a delight to see your enthusiasm towards helping individuals that do not receive enough support. The National Institute of Mental Health estimated in 2019, one in five adults in the United States struggle with mental illness (para. 1). With alarmingly high incidence, the general population is reluctant to speak out about the issue. An individual struggling with mental illness has two major obstacles, one their condition, and the second the stigma that follows (Finzen, 1996) NURS – 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing.

Conditions worsened in 2020. The implications of COVID 19 on mental health are devastating. Following any crisis, mental health support is crucial. A group of authors raises the question, “Body and mind, are we prepared for the toll this pandemic will take on mental health?” (Ellis, Light & Wynter, 2020). In their article, they anticipate the aftereffects to those after the Spanish flu, even worse. The COVID 19 pandemic has forced the world to make considerable changes. Simple daily life components became an elaborate ordeal, such as school, work, weddings, funerals, grocery runs, the list is endless.  As the number of infected rises, so does the anxiety and fear, without partiality to an age group NURS – 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing.

The foundation of the academic studies at Walden academy is a pivotal instrument of positive social change (Walden University, 2020). No one is free from the stress. The pandemic exacerbated the stressors of nurses. However, Walden University helps individuals reach their dreams even through the pandemic, equipped with an array of resources and support staff. Becoming a scholar-practitioner is more than a mere practice of science, and Walden university is more just an educational institution. Walden University is a community that shares the desire to bring a positive social impact.

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

Over the past eight years as a registered nurse, I have worked at the bedside caring for patients with illnesses including the following, but not limited to: pneumonia, hepatic disease, sepsis, post op surgeries, cardiac arrest patients, coronary artery bypass, and neuroendocrine tumor surgeries. I have had the opportunity of working alongside of some exceptional healthcare workers that have inspired me to advance my career. Throughout my profession, I always knew I wanted to enhance my knowledge and have thought in depth about what I really want. I have witnessed many years patients being treated by their diagnosis itself, but not including their overall wellbeing. With that being said, it is my aspiration to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and care for patients from a holistic view and assist them by improving their whole wellbeing NURS – 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing.

After recently moving to Maryland, I conversed with a Nurse Practitioner who obtained her degree through Walden University and recommended that I look into their flexible program. Walden University’s vision is to provide education that nurses can implement in their patient’s plan of care and needs (Walden University, 2020, para.1). According to Walden University, they “provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive change” (Walden University, 2020, para 2). Once I started to compare multiple programs and read these visions and mission declarations as well as their flexibility; I realized I found the right school that is fitting for my family and me. I look forward to “applying the knowledge that you gained and the theory that you’ve learned and put it into practice in the real setting” (Laureate Education).

It is my goal to grow from a “novice nurse to an expert nurse” (Laureate Education) by obtaining the knowledge provided by Walden University to make a difference in my community. One other important goal I’d like to achieve during this program, is learning how to network. “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 70% of jobs are found through professional networking and opportunities that arise from networking are priceless are limitless” (Wofford, 2018). Since my recent move to Maryland, I have started to learn about networking through a website called Indeed and I was astounded by how many notifications of interest I received. “Being a confident networker is a necessity” (Wofford, 2018) and I look forward to learning more.

Incorporation of Social Change

Social change is not a topic I have honestly given much thought about, but after reading Walden’s definition, I have a better understanding of how important it is in the nursing field. Positive social change is defined by Walden University as a “deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies” (Walden University, 2020, para 4). With the knowledge I gain throughout this program and the new thought process of creating social change, I intend to incorporate this to the institution I am affiliated with. Social change is crucial with the new and upcoming technology every few years and our community depend on us to adapt to this mindset.

As you begin any new venture in life there is going to be concerns that need to be addressed to succeed. As I began this MSN program my concerns were like many students, I was concerned about being successful in my classes and how I could be successful. To be successful, it is important to be organized in every area of our lives. To make the transition into this master’s program successful focus needs to be on, “Methods to reduce stress by students often include effective time management, social support, positive reappraisal, and engagement in leisure pursuits” (Misra & McKean, 2015). One important area I think I focused on is time management. Scheduling time for schoolwork, work and home life is imperative to successfully completing this program.

A specific class that I am very concerned with is Advanced Pathophysiology. I would like direction on how to be successful in that class. I have struggled with this class before. I feel like I was overwhelmed with the amount of information that was given and then tested on. I tried studying multiple different ways such as reading, flashcards and listening to lectures. Learning styles have been defined as cognitive, affective, and physiological characteristics with four sensory modalities: Visual (observing pictures, symbols or diagrams), auditory (listening, discussing), visual/iconic (reading and writing), and kinesthetic (using tactile sensory abilities such as smell and touch) (Bhagat, Vyas, & Singh, 2015). I know that I will need to use a lot of different learning styles to be successful in classes.

After graduation I am concerned about the transition to the role of a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I want to be successful in my new role. I feel like the foundational support from Walden will be crucial to my transition into my new role. During NP role transition, there are different personal and environmental factors to promote the transition, and two of these include experience and formal orientation (Barnes, 2015). I think the place I choose to work at can set me up for success with a thorough orientation. I would like input on other things that could help me transition into a successful nurse practitioner.

Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions

In Module 1, you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network-individuals and teams who can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can now be helpful.

In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions even if they do not realize it!

To prepare:

  • Reflect on questions or concerns you might have as you begin the MSN program.
  • Consider the individuals, teams, and departments you previously considered in Module 1 as well as how they may provide support with addressing these questions and concerns.

By Day 3 of Week 2

Post any questions or concerns that you are willing to share with the group. The Discussion board represents an opportunity to network with your course colleagues, and others may have the same questions or concerns.

By Day 6 of Week 2

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering a possible resolution to their questions/concerns with supporting documentation, if possible, or expanding on their thinking and providing an example as support.

It has been a long dream of mine to go back to school but anxieties always set in and many questions came into my mind. I wonder if online learning is better than the traditional face to face environment. Am I able to put into practice the knowledge I learned and be a good nurse practitioner? Am I able to maintain a good GPA in this type of learning like I used to have in a traditional face to face? What could be the barriers along the way in this type of learning? I have misconceptions that I will be struggling with because I have been out of school for many years and switching from a traditional face-to-face to an online type of learning might be too hard to handle since I am not quite experienced technologically. Some studies show that students see online courses quite differently than traditional courses ( Kauffman, 2015). Often, the negative perceptions that surround learning can lead students to feel less motivated and persist through their studies (Kauffman, 2015). As I started my inquiries about Walden university, I saw that there were many ways to overcome my negative perceptions about online learning. The first thing I did was to attend the webinar on how to navigate the classroom, I took notes and allocated time almost every day on the computer, I visited the library so I will be familiar with how to find and cite my resources, and I navigated to other departments and printed courses and syllabus. The computer became my playground for a while until I got used to it. Now, I believe having little technological skills is not a barrier to online learning. At first, I felt frustrated but having a positive attitude and my determination to succeed were ways to overcome it.

A question that will always come to mind is: how do I manage my time without having any late assignments and discussions to post? Will I still have time to do my love for gardening? Will I find a time to play with my loving smart dog, Milo? Can I still spend time with my children, husband, and my siblings? I’m so anxious that going back to school will disrupt the things I like to do and I might not be able to handle it all while being a full-time nurse and having a family to take care of. Time management is one of the important factors to be successful in online learning (Kauffman, 2015). To be able to manage my time, I first printed my calendar schedule so I would be able to organize and priorities the things I need to do. Students who know how to manage their time and use their time proficiently are likely to succeed and perform better than those who do not have time management (Kauffman, 2015). Feeling motivated to learn and having a positive attitude is one of the reasons why I overcome the challenges of not being technologically skilled.

Interacting and sharing of ideas with colleagues is also important. At first, I thought I was the only one struggling but when I joined networking with colleagues, I realized I was not alone. The feeling of isolation is gone knowing that there are people you can reach out to and ask questions and give you inputs on what to do. When I reached out to a colleague about assignments that were due, I then learned about an application that can be downloaded on the mobile phone so all assignments and their due dates will be easily browsed. The hard work we make will pay off, just focus, be organized, be motivated, and have the willingness to adapt to change, manage your time, reach out, and stay connected.

New Journey

New journeys can be overwhelming and until recently I finally decided to begin this program shortly after speaking to my friend who is now a successful Nurse Practitioner (NP). Prior to speaking to her, I had contemplated for some time if online or face-to-face classes would be suitable for my family and I. At times I would ponder for hours asking myself if I was making the right decision. It wasn’t until she shared her success story of how she felt overwhelmed at times but expressed how online classes allowed her to juggle her family, work, school and personal life. “Online education offers convenience and flexibility that traditional face-to-face classes cannot, especially important for those learners balancing work, school, and family (Kauffman, 2015). It felt comforting to know that she and many other students like myself have succeeded in this online program. And because of their successes I have gained motivation that has led me here. Walden University’s all online program makes my dream of becoming an NP feasible. I can’t deny at times I feel overwhelmed, but the reminders that many of us are all in the same shoes eases my mind and strengthens me to push forward.

Successful Online Learner

My last bridge program to my BSN, I was obligated to attend class one Saturday out of every month and at the time, my sweet son wasn’t born yet and I was able to focus on my schoolwork. My priorities at this time of my life have changed and has been focused on my family. As I started this program, I began to question how I was going to be successful in this online program now that I am a mother, wife and nurse. “The experience you have and the learning you achieve are the results of not only the curriculum and faculty, but also of the efforts you make along the way” (Online College, n.d.). This statement hits it on the nail for me and anyone seeking success, because in order for a person to achieve something they have to put in the effort. As for me, time management seems to be my struggle, but I feel I’m improving. “Integrating online learning into your already busy schedule can be difficult. Therefore, it is important that online learned plan their time carefully”(10 Tips for Being a Successful Online Learner, 2018, p. 2). The first thing I did was print my syllabus, reading materials and marked all of my assignments in my calendar. By marking my calendar, it has forced me to plan ahead and set my priorities for each day. By doing this, it ensures me I will have adequate time for my family, work and school assignments, as well as decrease my stress and anxiety levels. It also compels me to make use of my time. Any advice on other ways I can improve my time management?

PLACE YOUR ORDER HERE

Another tip I have realized is necessary for becoming a successful online learner is communication among my peers and my instructor. Throughout an online program, no one can just raise their hand and ask a question as in the classroom setting, so it is important to reach out as soon as possible with any questions (10 Tips for Being a Successful Online Learner, 2018). This process of communication has already assisted me in clarifying some things for the first assignment and it gives me peace of mind knowing I can ask my peers or instructor if I don’t understand something or vice versa.

Technology

At first, Walden University’s program appeared to be overwhelming with the multiple ways of finding what you need. I did however find that the videos for orientation were very helpful with learning to navigate, but I am still having trouble with finding the student lounge. Does anyone know where this is so I can communicate with you all? I have been using the contact the instructor route for now. I am hopeful with time I will improve in my navigation skills throughout this program, but as for now I look forward to reading about any quick tips you may have to offer.
