NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

OVERVIEW

In this module, the nursing informatics specialty will be explored, including roles, core competencies, and standards of practice. Nursing and clinical informatics theories, models, and concepts are examined to analyze, predict, and manage nursing informatics-related phenomena. The module will explore the primary goals in nursing informatics and how clinical information technologies are impacting and will impact nursing. The module will also explore the more formalized clinical informatics roles that continue to evolve as technology adoption continues at a record pace in healthcare. Clinical informatics professionals have developed expertise within their respective domains to meet this demand and support the current and future vision to support safe, patient-centered care.NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

ACTIVITIES

Module 2 has two activities. Please consult the Course Calendar for the due dates.

Discussion Forum 2

In Discussion Forum 2, post your response to the following discussion question. Reply to at least two classmates’ responses by the date indicated in the Course Calendar.NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

In this module, we have been discussing the history and development of nursing informatics as a specialty within nursing and integrating the nursing informatics Scope and Standards of Practice. In addition, we have learned how informatics concepts impact nursing practice, including the need to standardize nursing terminologies.NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

Then, answer the following questions:

  1. If a healthcare organization is considering hiring a nursing informaticist, one consideration is that such a role does not involve direct patient care. How can this role be justified? Consider your current experience in working with individuals from your nursing informatics department. What types of roles and responsibilities do they perform in your organization? If you do not interact with such a department, utilizing what you have learned so far, what value do you see nursing informatics professionals bringing to your organization?NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

  1. Consider the need to extract data from the electronic health record (EHR) system for quality reporting or clinical research. How can a single agreed-upon model of terminology use (with linkages to a single terminology such as SNOMED CT or LOINC) help to achieve shareable, comparable, and quality data, based on evidence?

In responding to your classmates’ posts, consider opposing views. Do you agree with their assessments? Why or why not?NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

Written Assignment 1

Case Study from Chapter 6: Casting to the Future

Purpose and Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to explore a futuristic depiction of health care, applying theoretical concepts, examining the nurse as a knowledge worker, as well as the role and competency of the nurse informaticist.NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

Directions

Develop a 750- to 1500-word paper (3 to 5 pages), following proper APA format, addressing the points below, being mindful of the scope and standards of the nursing informaticist. Using the study materials listed in the module and outside academic research, include at least three scholarly references and in-text citations.NUR-531: NURSING INFORMATICS: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES.

  1. Describe the application of the DIKW paradigm to the case study.
  2. How might nurses in the scenario act as knowledge workers?
  3. Imagine you were a nursing informaticist in this scenario. Choose a minimum of two technologies mentioned. Describe the technology, its purpose, and how your role would support these technologies in practice.
