Within the health care industry, patient outcomes and care efficiencies are considered as an important measurement tool for evaluating success. Often, patient outcomes and care efficiencies are defined as the fulfilment of health care objective and goals from both the patient and provider perspective. These (patient outcomes and care efficiencies) are an important metrics for ensuring that the procedures and practices being applied are effective, even as they identify that that are not effective and should be accordingly revised. Measuring these metrics presents large data sets that are in turned used to improve the results in a number of ways (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nursing informatics focuses on integrating nursing science with other specialties to help with identifying, defining, managing and communicating wisdom, knowledge, information and data to provide better care in terms of improving patient outcomes and care efficiencies. In fact, nursing informatics focuses on identifying the best ways to achieve improved outcomes. Although big data can be applied to immediately impact patient outcomes and care efficiencies, delayed effects can also be realized through furthering important research. There are massive quantities of medical data that are available through nursing informatics, and they give medical research scientists more information to work with in improving patient outcomes and care efficiencies. For instance, nursing informatics presents data that provides a clearer picture of diseases such as diabetes and cancer, as well as determining the efficacy of nursing practices, imaging scans, medication, and other medical procedures and tools used in health care delivery. In fact, medical technologies such as wearable devices highlight this by providing access to large quantities of health information than ever before. They provide intimate data, such as patient blood pressure, heart rate and exercise habits, that are otherwise difficult to reliably collect on a daily basis unless the research has physical access to the patient (Gogia, 2019).

Secondly, nursing informatics provides data that helps to enhance efficiency. A typical use of big data from informatics is to enhance workplace efficiency in terms of making staffing recommendations. In health care, the small changes recommended by nursing informatics results could easily suggest small changes with significant impacts on the resources use such as limited finances and resources in the organization and staff time. Besides that, the informatics data can also be used to improve the health care setting, specifically reducing variations in procedures and practices. This is based on the awareness that unnecessary variations within the patient care environment would result in unnecessary expenses and suboptimal outcomes. In fact, informatics can point out unnecessary services and procedures, unnecessary use of more expensive options when cheaper options are available, excessive use of supply-sensitive care, provision of suboptimal clinical practices/processes, and underuse of care already proven to be effective. By reducing variations, medical personnel and organizations can ensure that they are using the most optimal procedures and creating the best changes for positive outcomes even as costs are lowered. In sorting and analyzing data, nursing informatics can identify purposefully wrong (financial abuse and other forms of fraud) and inefficient processes (Saba & McCormick, 2015). Thirdly, nursing informatics helps in identifying at-risk patients. It improves outcomes by identifying problems at the soonest opportunity rather than later. Without informatics, injuries and diseases that do not present symptoms until the medical condition is already advanced could easily be overlooked. In other times, patients could refrain from seeking medical care in a timely manner owing to financial difficulties, scheduling conflicts or fear. Informatics helps in addressing this concern by giving the medical personnel and patients a head start in addressing medical conditions that could easily become deadly if left untreated for a period of time. For instance, a disease registry can help to identify at-risk patients through manipulating pharmacy information, claims data and biometric information, which are used to determine the population of patients that could be at high risk of developing certain conditions as well as the unmet health care needs. Besides that, data can also help to ensure that warning signs (such as unfilled prescriptions) are flagged and that the care process does not skip any steps. These predictive steps not only identify high risk patients, but they also help to improve outcomes with regards to adverse events, decompensation, triage, readmission rates, and high-cost patients (Garcia-Dia, 2019).

Finally, nursing informatics helps to improve processes. There are countless standardized procedures applied by medical personnel and organizations to ensure that their daily operations occur in the proper while ensuring predictable outcomes. Medical organizations apply standardized processes in making staffing choices, purchasing decisions, scheduling protocols, clinical procedures and many more. With some many variables to be considered with improving medical processes, informatics intervenes to speed up the process while determining if the existing processes are effective and finding ways to improve them as needed. Nursing informatics analyses large amounts of data, which have the potential to improve the effectiveness of any process, from post-op care to medication recommendations. Informatics practices compares, crunches and extrapolates the data at the touch of a button so that improves can proceed speedily. The value that nursing informatics brings is particularly important in this present age of value-based care where medical personnel and organizations are increasingly being rewarded for eliminating unnecessary readmissions, processes and other costly medical practices without negatively impacting the patient outcomes and care efficiencies (Rivas & Wac, 2018). For instance, nursing informatics can be applied to effectively monitor the correlation between certain surgical procedures and readmissions, or the costs and effectiveness of two medications used against the same medication condition.

Nursing informatics helps to ensure that the right data is acquired, analyzed and accurate implications developed to improve results. As discussed, medical personnel have access to increasing volumes of medical data. Nursing informatics comes into play to ensure that that the value of the large volumes of data are maximized by ensuring timely and accurate data management. Through properly collecting, analyzing and leveraging the data from the metrics, nursing informatics serves an important function in enabling other medical professional to use the data in advancing research, enhancing efficiency, identifying at risk patients and improving medical processes, all done with the ultimate objective of improving patient outcomes and care efficiencies. In this respect, nursing informatics has a positive impact on patient outcomes and care efficiencies as identified in the way medical data is used.
