Evidence-Based Practice History

COLLAPSE Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice? March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world. When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP. In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP. To Prepare: Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP. Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative). Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident. By Day 3 of Week 1 Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.Evidence-Based Practice History

Where in the World is Evidence-Based Practice?

Description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed.

The website reviewed is for the National League for Nursing (NLN). This is the oldest professional nursing organization in the USA since it was founded in 1893. It represents nursing education in different forums, and offers nurses opportunities for professional development, continuous education and networking. A review of the website reveals that the organization is focus on improving nurses’ knowledge levels and enhancing their capacity to provide the best possible care through having access to resources (National League of Nursing, 2020a).

Describe where, if at all, EBP appears.

EBP appears in the organization’s mission and core values. The organization indicates that its mission is to promote excellence in nursing education to build a diverse and strong nursing workforce that advances the nation’s health as well as the health of the global community. The organization is guided to achieve the mission through four core values of caring, integrity, diversity and excellence. Both the mission and core values draw attention to the need for nurses to be well informed about current knowledge that affects their practice (National League of Nursing, 2020b).

Explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not.

The organization is grounded in EBP. This is evidenced by the fourth goal of the organization. This goal focuses on advancing the science of nursing by promoting research that generates evidence about nursing education and the scholarship of teaching. The collected evidence is used to influence nursing education and practice with implications for health care outcomes. This highlights a reliance on evidence thereby indicating that the organization’s work is grounded on EBP (National League of Nursing, 2020b).Evidence-Based Practice History

Explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization.

The information provided in the health care organization’s website has reinforced my perception that nursing is an evolving science that is always seeking to improve through using current knowledge as evidence. Nursing practice does not have all the answers and is always looking to improve. This is achieved through conducting scientific research that presents evidence that can be trusted. The evidence is then translated into practice thereby bring about changes within the nursing environment.
