Justification of the Topic
There is a dire need to investigate burnout among nurses based on several reasons. Burnout can be a medical diagnosis, according to the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11), if not sufficiently managed (Chen et al., 2019). Evidence-Based Practice Model
The Lowa Model of EBP will be used in implementing practice change related to nursing burnout. The model is effective in organizational systems change. The stages of the Lowa model are detection of the trigger when an EBP change is warranted, determining whether the problem is an organizational priority, forming a team to evaluate the need for the practice change and implementation, obtaining research related to the change project, synthesizing the research, and implementing the project in the form of a pilot (Buckwalter et al., 2017). One thousand four hundred nine registered nurses in tertiary hospitals constituted the sample. No association was found between nurse-patient ratios and the intent to leave the profession. Instead, the intent to leave the profession was fueled by a lack of motivation, job dissatisfaction, and burnout. A review conducted by Manyisa and Vas Aswegen (2017) intended to identify factors that influence nurses’ practice environment in public hospitals. Databases searched were Google Scholar, Pub Med, Science Direct, EBSCO, the LANCET, and MEDLINE. Scholarly literature considered was published between 2000 and 2014. Various themes were identified from this review. These were high workloads, longer shifts, shortage of nursing staff, and inadequate resources. They were found to influence nursing working environments.
The last study by Hall et al. (2016) was a systematic review to establish a correlation between nurses’ wellbeing, burnout, and patient safety. They searched the following databases for scholarly literature; PsychInfo, Scopus, Medline, and Embase. The authors identified 46 studies, out of which 27 established a correlation between poor wellbeing and burnout among nurses and diminished patient safety.
From the above findings, various clinical practice changes are proposed to reduce nursing burnout. Specifically, mental empowerment programs would be useful in improving mental wellbeing for nurses (Chen et al., 2019). Ultimately, improving mental wellbeing for nurses will reduce the incidence of burnout. It will also improve patient safety and care quality.
Nursing education should focus on coping strategies for burnout. Strategies such as breathing mechanisms, seeking support, and taking inventory of one’s stress should be recommended. Other coping approaches include delegation and engaging in healthy activities. Coping strategies are highly effective in assisting nurses in dealing with burnout.
Healthcare policies should be established to address the occurrence of burnout among nurses. Specifically, policies should focus on adequate nurse-patient staffing ratios (Hall et al., 2016). Burnout among nurses has been highly attributed to inadequate staffing. Therefore, implementing policies geared toward adequate staffing is crucial.
In summary, the paper provides evidence that nursing burnout poses a significant threat to patient safety. Burnout has been linked to decreased motivation, job dissatisfaction, and the nurse’s intent to exit the profession. It also undermines patient safety and the quality of care provided. The reviewed articles recommend that adequate staffing and ensuring mental wellness for nurses are two crucial factors in alleviating nursing burnout.
