Incivility has numerous negative effects on workplace environments. According to Asghari et al. (2017), it increases the incidence of medical errors, decreases patient satisfaction, and heighten the costs of healthcare. In this essay, the author defines incivility, its importance to nursing, and its impact on individual nurses, work environments, and the overall profession. An example of incivility in a practice setting is outlined, and the impact it had on the parties involved and the work environment. Lastly, the paper discusses strategies of creating a healthful working environment and the strategies the author will implement in their role as a nurse executive to create a healthful working environment. The Issue of Incivility

Researchers have defined incivility in nursing in different ways. Zhang et al. (2018) define incivility as low-intensity aberrant behaviour with an abstruse intent to hurt the target, which ultimately violates policies that govern mutual respect among workers. Incivility, therefore, encompasses rude, belittling, and insulting behaviour from one employee to another. According to the American Nursing Association (ANA), incivility refers to any rude, discourteous, or disrespectful actions from one employee to another. It encompasses gossiping, refusing to assist co-workers, spreading rumours, expressing public criticism, use of condescending tones, or name-calling. While these behaviours mostly occur laterally among employees at the same professional level, they can also occur vertically between these behaviours are directed to subordinate workers. The American Nursing Association (2015) position statement on incivility maintains that all nurses must make a devotion to, and accept accountability for creating and endorsing healthy working environments characterized by interpersonal relationships. Bambi et al. (2019) assert that Incivility is crucial in nursing, as it significantly impacts the practice environment for all nurses. A culture of nursing incivility also affects the overall microsystem and work environments. It leads to reduced teamwork and cooperation between different workers or units, increased incidence of medical errors, and lower productivity among staff. These have detrimental effects on the overall productivity and efficiency of the health organization. Other effects of workplace incivility include diminished patient safety, increased sentinel events, and increased patient mortality (Shi et al., 2018). As a result, incivility increases the rates of turnover and absence from work for nurses. It negatively affects the organization’s reputation as well as the nurse-patient relationship. Example of Incivility in Practice Setting

In my previous work setting, I encountered a troubling example of work incivility, where a seasoned nurse in power directed demeaning actions to a new graduate nurse who was transitioning from a professional career business unit to the emergency department. While the new graduate nurse brought in to the organization years of experience, rich experiences, and an advanced degree, she made an early enemy with a seasoned nurse in power for unknown reasons. The seasoned nurse expressed actions such as bullying, gossiping, and criticism of the new nurse. In the end, the incidents of lateral violence drove out the new nurse out of the profession. Impact of the Nurse Involved

Unfortunately, the incidences of lateral violence adversely affected the nurse’s mental health as well as emotional wellbeing. Before leaving the profession, the nurse demonstrated signs of depression, such as fatigue, anxiety, depression, and other mental health illnesses. Impact on the Work Environment

The disrespectful and uncivil behaviour of the senior nurse in a position of power had a detrimental impact on the broader practice setting. As the target new graduate nurse was emotionally affected, he was highly prone to make medical errors when attending the patients. The actions of the senior nurse also impacted the work environment by jeopardizing patient safety, increasing the rates of turnover, and adversely affecting the organization’s reputation. Strategies of Creating a Healthful Environment in Nursing

Creating a healthful working environment is a priority for all healthcare organizations. Various approaches can thus be executed to ensure that nurses practice in healthy settings.

Communication creates healthy practice settings by preventing confusion, creating accountability, and providing a purpose that unites all workers.
