Your reflection should be brief (approximately 150 words).:

Week 1: Nurses as Advocates for Change: Full Partners in the Health Care System
This week provides an overview of how health policy impacts and enhances advocacy and patient outcomes. You will focus on the role of nurses as advocates for change in the health care system. You will also explore the difficulties regarding policy making and policy implementation within the health care system.A Reflection on the Course Content.

For nurses to have an effective voice in decision making and to be full partners in that next level, nurses must understand the big picture of the health care system and its varied complexities. Nurses must also understand the impact that changes will have on the quality and efficacy of the health care we deliver to our patients.A Reflection on the Course Content.

This week, you will select a health care policy that is important to you and begin a 5-week analysis of that policy. Your analysis will culminate in your Position Paper. The Discussion will serve as an important first step toward your Position Paper because it will start you in the process of collecting information and personal opinions related to the paper.(Death with Dignity Act)
Week 2: Health Care Delivery and Financing
How many times have we seen an individual who cannot afford to pay for his or her medications, go to his or her doctor, or pay for a test? Congress enacted The Affordable Care Act (ACA) as a safety net for people. Has it helped? The questions we ask, to paraphrase Voltaire, can be as important as our answers.A Reflection on the Course Content.

Policies such as those embodied in the ACA often create a split. They help one group while making matters worse for another. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement lists cost control as one of its three main goals to optimize health system performance. Funding and financing is an unavoidable reality of health care and health care policy, and you must, therefore, understand and analyze this aspect of your professional life.A Reflection on the Course Content.

As with any policy or program, financing is a critical component in the development, implementation, and sustainability of health care and health care policy. To effectively advocate for an issue or policy, you must be able to identify funding sources. This week, you will examine the rapid and dynamic changes in financing health care and review ways that health care policy and financing impacts advocacy.

This week, your Discussion analyzes how changes in health care financing impact health outcomes, as well as how nurses can manage such changes. Your Assignment utilizes the health care policy that you selected in your Week 1 Discussion and examines it from a financing perspective.A Reflection on the Course Content.
Week 3: Health System Quality and Safety Outcomes
Quality and safety occupy a high level of priority in the nursing profession today. Much of the emphasis on quality and safety is rooted in Institute of Medicine (IOM) research related to nursing and medication administration, the length of a day a nurse works, and communication issues within the practice setting (Institute of Medicine, 1999, 2001). Improving these areas has become a priority for nurses and health policy. Ensuring quality care and a safe patient environment are basic nursing roles. From the Affordable Care Act to the Institutes of Medicine, there are a number of critical policies that significantly influence patient outcomes and nursing practice.A Reflection on the Course Content.

This week, you will explore the role of nursing in the prevention of threats to patient safety and the assurance of quality care. In the Assignment, you will look at patient safety and quality of care as it applies to the health care policy that you selected in Week 1(Death with Dignity Act).
Week 4: The Future of Nursing and Interprofessional Partnerships in the Health Care System
Nurses are full partners in the health care system and, as such, must take the lead in improving the health care system, as well as health outcomes. As advocates, nurses must advance or revise current policy. In order to be truly successful, nurses must have strong skills in systems thinking. To be effective policy advocates, nurses must develop strong interprofessional and collaborative skills as well as close ties to other health care professionals and other nursing associations.A Reflection on the Course Content.

Working on interprofessional teams is a core competency for nurses today. As the IOM report states, nurses need to: “Cooperate, collaborate, communicate, and integrate care in teams to ensure that care is continuous and reliable”(Finkelman & Kenner, 2012, p. 4). “Interprofessional teams work collaboratively and collegially, not in parallel. No health professional plans any aspect of care in isolation; instead, all team members should work together to plan and implement care” (Finkelman & Kenner, 2012, p. 82).A Reflection on the Course Content.

Interprofessional Collaborative Teams: “Precursors to collaboration are individual clinical competence and mutual trust and respect. Collaboration requires shared understanding of goals and roles, shared decision-making, and conflict management. We need to learn how to have a respectful professional dialogue that considers different perspectives” (Finkelman & Kenner, 2012, p. 83).A Reflection on the Course Content.

This week, you will consider gaps and barriers that may impact collaboration with other professions as well as other nurses. You will also consider how these gaps and barriers may impede the improvement of health policy and health outcomes. In your Discussion, you will examine these barriers to interprofessional practice. In your Assignment, you will evaluate a pseudocampaign aimed at increasing awareness of issues in health care and complete a letter to a state representative asking for assistance in improving conditions relevant to those issues. Note: This campaign is not current, so you should NOT actually send letters to state representatives.A Reflection on the Course Content.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
Analyze strategies to improve gaps or barriers in interprofessional practice
Analyze the viewpoint of a nursing association on a policy stand
Analyze strategies for increasing awareness of nursing association campaigns
Week 5: The Impact of Health and Social Policy in Advocating Change
Let’s step back this week and look at the environment in which we live. In your local environment, you may see individuals who are homeless or addicted to illegal drugs, veterans with mental health issues, or immigrants who are not in this country through legal means. Ask yourself, “How do these individuals access health services? What policies are in place to protect these groups of underserved individuals?”A Reflection on the Course Content.

Social policy directly impacts health care policy and health care outcomes. This week is a review of major social issues that are the focus of nurses’ advocacy, as well as the nurse’s role in advancing these issues. You will explore how social policy impacts health care outcomes and why nurses should be concerned with influencing social policy.A Reflection on the Course Content.

In your Discussion this week, you will explore determinants of health and their impact on the community as well as your practice. Your Position Paper is also due this week.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
Analyze how nurses use policy and politics to improve health and health care in the community
Identify social issues currently being advocated for by nursing
Analyze how nurses use policy to advocate for social change
Analyze a policy from different viewpoints to evaluate its effectiveness

Week 6: Advocating for Social Change in the Health Care System
As nurses, you can be a part of positive change in health care with as little as reviewing a letter to a senator and sending it forward via e-mail. Nurses are trusted and respected professionals and, as such, are in a wonderful position to effectuate positive changes in health care policy.

Your successful impact on health care outcomes requires you to lead and voice your ideas and thoughts about necessary policy changes. This often requires a change in society’s attitude and requires social change. You are indispensable to that process.

This week is an examination of how nurses can promote and influence social change. You will examine how nurses can take a proactive role as a critical component of nursing practice.A Reflection on the Course Content.

For the Discussion, you will have a classroom debate about whether health care is a right or a privilege. In addition, you will complete a Journal entry reflecting on this course and on your ideas about applying topics from the course to stimulate social change.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
Examine the idea of health care as either a right or a privilege
Evaluate the nurse’s role as an advocate for social change

This must be done in APA 7th edition

A Reflection on the Course Content: Major Concepts, Health Policy, and Advocacy for Social Change

This particular course on health policy and its impact on the nursing profession and nursing practice as a whole has been very fulfilling and a great eye opener. Being a nurse, one does not easily connect the relationship between policy and practice because nurses are inherently programmed to be solely care givers. The following is a personal reflection on the course and how it impacts the nursing field.A Reflection on the Course Content.

The major concepts in the course have been the role of nurses as advocates for both the profession and the patient, the delivery of healthcare and its financing, quality of care and patient safety, and the future of nursing including cooperation with other healthcare professionals. Nurses voice the concerns of patients with regard to any new policy, reassure patients who cannot afford healthcare and direct them to appropriate state and federal resources where they can get help, and maintain care that is safe, effective, efficient, equitable, patient-centered, and timely (Tzelepis et al., 2015). Lastly, nursing as a profession is expected to grow and nurses are expected to be in the forefront in fostering interprofessional collaboration and partnership.A Reflection on the Course Content.

Health policy impacts the nursing role directly, and nurses become responsible for patient outcomes since they are the ones actualizing all care plans. For instance, value-based care expects nurses to only offer quality and not quantity (Zangerle et al., 2016). The nursing role is thus best for advocating for social change since nurses are always with patients and their relatives. In conclusion, health policy greatly impacts and directs nursing practice.     A Reflection on the Course Content.
