Philosophy of Nursing Practice Written Philosophy of Nursing Practice Essay

Nursing philosophy is defined as “the substantive, discipline-specific knowledge that focuses on the human-universe process articulated in the frameworks and theories.” (McEwen & Wills, 2019, p.12). My personal philosophy of nursing practice is a collection of reflections on the values, principles, and beliefs that have guided my professional practice as a nurse. My philosophy is characterized by the endeavors to provide culturally sensitive, empathetic, and holistic care. I believe that all humans are created equal, and that everyone has a responsibility to care for and to be cared for.My idea of care is not simply to diagnose patients and provide the required treatment. Rather it extends beyond being a provider to include acting as an advocate, teacher, leader, and manager so that I influence all aspects of health hence ensuring that individuals and communities receive the best possible care with the best outcomes (Vana & Tazbir, 2021). In addition to care, there is a need for compassion. To be able to understand others as human beings, be it at the scientific, physical, social, psychological, and emotional levels, I feel that compassion must be incorporated. Compassion inspires personal touch as it focuses on ensuring that patients receive personalized care that identifies and meets their unique needs of care. In addition, I believe nurses should strive to provide evidence base care, that which they are competent in providing which will intern promote safety hence preventing risk or negative outcome. Overall, my philosophy as a nurse is that I have a responsibility to provide patient-centered, holistic, safe nursing care that identifies and meets the individual health needs of my patients and community (Finkelman, 2019). The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) prepares nurses to integrate nursing theory and scientific principles to guide nursing practice and enhance patient care. It also enhances leadership qualities, knowledge, and proper utilization of evidence-based practice in clinical areas (Sherrod & Goda, 2016, p.13). Some personal goals that are grounded in my nursing philosophy include being a change agent, educating, and creating awareness. As healthcare evolves, dissemination of information and resources remains the key to providing access to information and resources to others especially among people in the underserved areas. With change being inevitable, I plan on using my role as a DNP-prepared nurse to champion change and advocate for positive social change. As a lifelong learner, the utilization of acquired experience, knowledge, expertise, and personal philosophy is what will propel my practice. I plan on practicing in rural areas where there is minimal or no access to healthcare. Focusing on these areas has been my goal as I witnessed both young and old people suffer from mental health disorders that can be managed. Educating people on health promotion and prevention hence minimizing the stigma of mental health will enhance social change among the underserved population. In addition, advocating and providing resources such as locations of inpatient, outpatient clinic to the community will equally be the driving force in seeking healthcare. Introduction
Nursing theories form an integral part of nursing research and nursing practice. According to McEwan & Wills (2021), “The function of middle range theories is to describe, explain, or predict phenomena and, unlike grand theory, they must be explicit and testable. Thus, they are easier to apply in practice situations and to use as a framework for research studies.” These theories have proven to be useful in addressing various clinical problems, (McEwan & Wills, 2021). The Practice Issues
The practice issue being explored is culture and mental health treatment compliance. The underutilization of mental health services among people with different culture appears to be a growing concern given that risk factors such as poverty, unemployment, the acculturation process, low level of education, stigma, community support and resources. According to Gopalkrishnan, (2018), Cultural diversity across the world has significant impacts on the many aspects of mental health, ranging from the ways in which health and illness are perceived, health seeking behavior, and compliance to mental health treatment. According Gopalkrishnan, (2018), only 66 percent of minority adults have a regular mental health care provider compared to 80 percent of white adults. The Middle Range Theories
The two middle range theories chosen for this discussion include The Pender’s middle range theory and Leininger’s Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory. Leininger’s middle range theory address the cross-cultural analysis in the nursing discipline. For nurses to offer universal care they are all encouraged and recommended to understand the culture and values of the diverse patient population, Nurses are required to study the patient’s understanding of their illnesses, and to recognize how cultural diversity can influence the patient’s ability to seek healthcare, because a better understanding of the patients culture, values and healthcare needs will lead to a better healthcare outcome (McEwen & Wills, 2019).
Pender’s middle range theory integrates behavioral science and requires nurses to explore patient behavior and influencing factors (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Pender’s middle range theory should be used as a guide to explore the biopsychosocial process that motivates individuals to engage in behaviors directed towards health enhancement. Nurse should look into the different health variables that have shown to impact people with different culture to seek and maintain mental health treatment compliance. Understanding and addressing the issues behind cultural stigma, psychiatric nursing shortage, language barriers, cost, accessibility, community support and resources, will change the behaviors of this individuals hence an increased need to seek mental health care services. It is important to educate and guide patient about mental health through health promotion care at churches, nursing centers, schools and at the community at large. Barriers exist that can affect adherence to mental health treatment. Understanding ways to promote health requires recognition of barriers to mental health treatment. For example, in rural areas, barriers to treatment include mental health stigmas, psychiatric provider shortages, deficiencies in cultural competency among providers, cost of care, and transportation to treatment providers (Rural Health Information Hub, 2022). Empowerment for self-care through education, advocating in our communities is imperative to breaking culturally sensitive barriers to mental health compliance care.
