The cultural group selected for this discussion is older Chinese adults since they comprise the largest Asian subgroup representing 4% of the general US population. A common healthcare practice observed among older Chinese adults is the use of Chinese herbs such as ginseng, ginger, red yeast rice, and cinnamon to manage both acute and chronic conditions before considering Western medical approaches (Liu et al., 2015). The preference for the use of herbs is attributed to the fact that, just like other medical management strategies, herbs correct unhealthy body patterns by improving sleep, reducing pain and symptoms of flu, improving breathing and digestion, increasing energy and regulation of the menstrual cycle. Leininger would view the cultural practice of using herbs to manage acute and chronic conditions among older Chinese adults as a holistic approach to care that nurses should pay attention to, to promote a patient’s well-being and prevent cultural conflict, moral and ethical concerns, stress and non-compliance in the clinical setting (Leininger, 2002). Leininger’s theory can be integrated into practice by reviewing the cultural values and healthcare practices of older Chinese adults. The nurse should assess the herbs used by the patient and determine if any are contraindicated with the drugs the patient is taking. Thereafter, the patient can be allowed to use his/her herbs as part of management. The incorporation of western treatment strategies with the healthcare practices and cultural values of a patient promotes patient comfort and increases the chances of successful treatment outcomes by reducing non-compliance (Leininger, 2002). In instances where contraindications between herbs and specific medications are found, negotiation plays an essential role in helping older Chinese adults to adapt without necessarily compromising their values.
