Topic 3 DQ 2: Two Methods for Evaluation of Evidence Essay

Two methods for evaluating evidence are quantitative and qualitative methods. The former evaluates data by use of numerical manipulation such as means and standard deviations. The latter is mainly concerned with observed characteristics of the evidence or what can be described as the quality of manifestation of the same. In other words, the former measures the quantity of evidence while the latter measures the quality of evidence. With this information, evaluation of evidence in nursing evidence-based practice can therefore be seen as dependent on the study methodology or design. Topic 3 DQ 2: Two Methods for Evaluation of Evidence Essay. Quantitative studies use statistical calculations and often draw inferences as a result of the use of nonparametric inferential statistics. These studies include experimental studies like randomized controlled trials as well as cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, and cohort studies. The defining attribute for quantitative evaluation of evidence is therefore the manipulation of the independent variable to determine changes in the dependent variable. Qualitative studies manipulate no variables and the evidence is just evaluated by merely observing the quality of phenomena. Broad themes are then generated from which evidence will then be evaluated qualitatively (PCC, 2019). Both methods are needed in the evaluation of evidence intended to build evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing.

One important thing with these two methods of evaluating evidence in nursing is that the matter of generalizability of the evidence must be kept in mind. But generalizability or reliability is dependent on both the sample size and the methodology. Because the quantitative method of evaluating evidence uses a robust methodology that controls many of the extraneous confounding variables, it may make use of just a moderate sample size and produce reliable results. That cannot be said about the qualitative method. For the qualitative method to yield reliable evaluation of the evidence, the sample size must be big enough in order to correctly represent the nature and quality of the observed characteristic in the entire population.

Topic 3 DQ 1: Strengths and Weaknesses of Discussion Board Articles

A summary of six of the reflective articles posted on the discussion board as well as their strengths and weaknesses is as follows:

  1. Capstone Change Project Topics: This article found several needs at Kingston Healthcare that all related to covid-19 infections. These were infection control, provision of enough PPEs, and weekly staff testing for covid-19. The community needs were health promotion and psychosocial support. The strength of the article is that it focused on the real problem (covid-19), while its weakness is that it proposed some topics whose solution was not immediately feasible (such as reducing asymptomatic transmission at Kingstone Healthcare).
  2. Capstone Project Change Proposal: Reduction in Coronavirus Incidence at Kingstone Healthcare in California: This article identified the problem at Kingstone Healthcare as inappropriate use of PPEs leading to an upsurge in novel coronavirus infections. To reduce the spread, the article suggested transformational leadership at Kingston Healthcare as the solution (educating staff and training them). Topic 3 DQ 2: Two Methods for Evaluation of Evidence Essay.  The strength of this article is in its specificity to detail on reasons for inappropriate use of PPEs (Gordon & Thompson, 2020). Its weakness is in suggesting transformational leadership without specifying the management level (Northouse, 2019).

Practicum Reflective Journal Week 2: Population Health Concerns: This article was about population health concerns related to fears about the efficacy and safety of the covid-19 vaccines being administered at Kingstone Healthcare such as the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines. Its weakness is that it concentrated only on Blacks as the community refusing to get the vaccine, yet many Caucasians are sceptical too (Jamison, 2020). The strength is that it specifies the efforts taken by Kingston Healthcare staff in educating vaccinated persons on the importance of continuing protective measures even after getting vaccinated.
  4. Reflective Journal Week 3: Practices of Culturally Sensitive Care: This article was about patient education and creating awareness at Kingston Healthcare in California concerning covid-19 infections and vaccinations. Its strength is that it is unequivocal on the need for vaccination and at the same time continuing with preventive measures like mask wearing. Its weakness is that it is scarce on details.
  5. Practicum Reflective Journal Week 3: Ethical Considerations in Healthcare in Administering the Covid-19 Vaccine: This article was about ethical considerations to be made by staff at Kingston hen administering covid-19 vaccines. Its strength is the recognition that autonomy must be preserved by preventing coercion during vaccination. Conclusion

All of these six articles had their strengths and weaknesses. However, all of them tackled the identified problem at Kingston Healthcare in California. That is the surging novel coronavirus cases despite use of PPEs and application of preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing of face masks, and social distancing. The weaknesses have one common theme – a narrow focus. On the other hand, the strengths have one theme too which is specificity to the problem ad identification of appropriate measures to be taken. For instance, staff education on the proper use of PPEs.
