The quality improvement initiative focuses in creating a quality assurance unit that would improve performance, thereby leading to improved health outcomes and increased patient satisfaction. It recognizes that quality in colonoscopy is increasingly being recognized, especially in the face of concerns about bowel cancer and the associated screening programs. Currently, there is a significant variation in the performance of the endoscopy department. In the endoscopy department, the rates of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer, adenoma detection and cecal intubation (all indicators of incompletely exercised or overlooked malignant or premalignant lesions) vary considerably within the department thereby raising concerns about the quality of services (Rutter &Beintaris, 2016).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative. These variations are only evidence when the performance is measured, thus implying that without the measurement there would be no opportunity to improve service delivery at the department. To maximize the quality of endoscopy services at the department, the quality improve initiative will focus on measuring all domains of services offered at the department to include adherence to the minimum recognized quality of standards for clinical procedures, adherence to clinical guidelines, timeliness, staffing levels, and equipment. The collected data will then be compared to standardized performance measures that would act as a motivation for endoscopy services to aim at reducing performance variations and improving standards. The goal of the initiative justifies these efforts as it seeks to improve patient health outcomes(Rutter &Beintaris, 2016).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.

The target population or audience.

The quality improvement initiative recognizes that efforts to improve the quality of services in the endoscopy department is targeted at the department and patients. It is targeted at the department with a view to identifying the performance areas of concerns based on comparisons with benchmarks. For instance, if the benchmarks determine that other facilities have better average performance than the department, then the intention to compete can act as a powerful motivation for the department to aim for higher standards while reducing performance variations. The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative. In addition, the initiative is targeted at the medical personnel by helping to correlate specific practices with service performance and helping to determine causation relationships thereby identifying the specific practices to improve performance. Besides that, the initiative is targeted at patients by ensuring that they receive the expected services to make certain of the desired care outcomes in terms of the right diagnosis being delivered at the right time to facilitate timely and effective care delivery (Fawcett, 2016).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.

The benefits of the quality improvement initiative.

The quality improvement initiative recognizes that there is a significant variation in the performance of the endoscopy department. In the endoscopy department, the rates of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer, adenoma detection and cecal intubation vary considerably within the department thereby raising concerns about the quality of services. The variations are all indicators of incompletely exercised or overlooked malignant or premalignant lesions. The initiative will ensure that there are no longer any variations in performance so that performance is effectively improved even as patients’ satisfaction is increased and health outcomes are improved(Rutter &Beintaris, 2016).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.

The interprofessional collaboration that would be required to implement the quality improvement initiative.

Interprofessional collaboration is critical to the success of the quality improvement initiatives. That is because each profession presents a unique perspective on the problem while working together thereby allowing for continuous improvements. The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative. In fact, the interprofessional team members present unique competencies of importance to the initiative. Some of the competencies they present include having the ability to effectively work with others, good negotiation and communication skills, understanding of the constraints of one’s own roles, and being knowledgeable about the roles of other professions. These competencies are important for making the team members receptive users of the project who understand and are willing to embrace the initiative, especially as there is clear evidence of the expected gains from the project (Raingruber, 2017). Besides that, the collaboration gives the members a sense of ownership. Adopting a supportive (rather than punitive) approach is important, especially with regards to safeguarding patient confidentiality as it focuses on introducing a degree of anonymity in the data management that helps with addressing some of their concerns. Additionally, participation would be made compulsory since voluntary participation would result in those with suboptimal performance not participating and this would be to the detriment of patients. Overall, there is a recognition that for the initiative to success in the long-term, it must be imbedded in the routine endoscopy activities(Fawcett, 2016).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.

The cost or budget justification.

The project budget will be spent on creating a data management team. The team will make use of the data already available to identify shortcomings in the service delivery within the endoscopy department. Based on the identified trends and benchmarks, the team will make recommendations for practice changes to improve performance. The team will comprise of three members. Firstly, an informatics specialist who is able to manage statistical analysis of medical data. Secondly, a personnel representative who will present the interests of medical personnel engaged in the endoscopy department. Thirdly, a management representative who will offer access to the electronic health records system and ensure compliance with data use regulations and legislation (Schmidt & Brown, 2019).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.

The basis upon which the quality improvement initiative will be evaluated.

The quality improvement initiative will be evaluated based on performance in terms of deviation of actual performance from past performance and benchmarks. There is an expectation of a positive trend to indicate improvement. Besides that, performance will be evaluated based on feedback from patients and medical personnel who will be expected to talk about the changes they have experienced (Schmidt & Brown, 2019).The Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative.
