RE: Discussion – Week 5

As we live everyday life, we live by a set of morals and values. Our personal values in life tend to reflect those that we display when we are within our company or place of employment, which are identity markers (Kirova, 2021). The values in a company or organization are typically preset, for example the hospital I work at uses the ICARE values. These values are integrity, compassion, accountability, respect, excellence (n.d.). I believe that while these are preset for the organizations employees to follow while performing their best work these values can be used in your day-to-day life. My initial thoughts when first beginning the assessment, aligned with my results. My results weren’t as surprising because they match my personality and values on and off the court, which is a term I use stating I am the same person outside of my home, and inside of my home in my personal, private life. My Signature Themes Report is as followed:

  1. Restorative
  2. Empathy
  3. Developer
  4. Positivity
  5. Responsibility

When I view my Signature themes reports, its not to far from what many would say model the core values of being a nurse. Aaryan Singh states that the core values of being a nurse are empathy and caring, communication, teaching, communication, critical thinking, teaching, ethical and legal considerations (2021). The main core value that I can relate to is empathy and caring as that is the 2nd theme on my Signature Themes List. According to Don Clifton’s Strength Finder assessment, being an empath is being able to sense the emotions of those around me (Gallup, 2022). I am very in tune with the emotions of those around me. If I sense something is wrong with someone, I try to get to the bottom of what they are feeling and how I can help them or uplift them. I am also not surprised with the positivity as I am always thanking and praising the work of others when I am at work especially.  Being a developer is no surprise to me at all either, as I am one who sees the potential in everyone around me. I find myself challenging not only myself but my friends and colleagues to be better or become better as I can see the potential of greatness with in them. The two themes I would like to strengthen is responsibility as that being my last theme is no surprise to me and be restorative which is a shock that that is my number one theme. To be a leader, one is faced with great responsibility. I have always taken a back seat to any leader position, for example I have been asked to become a Charge Nurse on several occasion, but I do not like the responsibility the position holds, nor do I like being responsible for others. I feel if I embraced the theme of responsibility, I could do great things in my career. I also find restorative being number one hard to believe as I am not one who likes to be faced with problems or adversity. I can handle it if so, as long as I know what I am doing or have experienced it before, but I would not say I am just a head on problem solver. Maybe I am restorative in a sense of trying to dig deeper into what could be wrong with someone and coming up with a solution to help them feel better or overcome their own issues.

Hello,

Thank you for your post. I enjoyed reading it and getting to know more about you. I find it interesting that being restorative is your greatest attribute or strongest signature theme. I believe this is a uniquely strong theme to posses as an individual and as a nurse. I say so because you highlighted the fact that you are in tune with your emotions and those of others, which also manifests your ability to care about others. You also posit that you have always taken a back seat in matters leadership; which makes you question your ability to be restorative. I would like to challenge you by asking you to consider your caring nature as a manifestation of your restorative signature theme. By caring about others; be it your friends, relatives, or patients, you help restore calmness and love within them with your kindness. While it is possibly for the better that you develop your leadership skills, I believe that you should also develop another perspective towards your restorative theme. I am impressed by your ability to be empathetic towards others as it is crucial in nursing; since it allows you to provide comfort to your patients and develop positive nurse to patient relationships. I would also encourage you to explore more of your restorative attribute to allow you to develop better problem-solving skills. I believe that as a nurse, you should be able to handle adverse situations without panicking or escaping the problem. Perhaps you should consider exploring self-help resources on coping with adversity, practice meditation and yoga to equip you with skills to center yourself during adversity, and practice mindfulness in tough situations. Antonini Philippe et al. (2021) and Sun et al. (2022) argue that these practices enable and individual to develop resilience and hope which are important for problem solving endeavours (. Overall, your signature themes prepare you to be the best nurse and individual, especially when you strengthen your weaknesses. The Core Values of Nursing Assignment
