Section One – Self Reflection
Your initial perception of substance use disorder
Substance use disorder SUD) is a mental disorder that affects an individual’s brain and behavior, often leading to their inability to control the usage of the drugs. The symptoms may vary from moderate to severe. Addiction is the most severe symptom of the disorder (Rohner et al., 2023). My initial perception of the disorder was that it was untreatable and so powerful that one could not control it. Thinking of someone with SUD, to me, meant that they are entirely unable to control their brain, and hence, their behavior changes cannot be reversed. Did your perception change or not, and why?
My perception towards SUD, however, changed significantly after a comprehensive learning of what SUD really is and how it affects different people. Firstly, the effects of SUD are not necessarily severe. Some people exhibit moderate symptoms, while others show highly severe symptoms. Patients with mild symptoms are likely to have a certain degree of control over their brains and behaviors (Vottero et al., 2023). It is, therefore, relatively more straightforward for such patients to heal compared to severely affected patients.
How would your perception affect your future practice as a PMHNP?
My perception of SUD will definitely affect my future practice as a PMHNP. As a PMHNP, I can properly diagnose and treat any patient with a mental disorder. The treatment starts from the diagnosis and proper analysis to identify the disorder and hence come up with a solution regardless of how long it may take. Therefore, I shall treat any patient either moderately or severely affected. Treatment of SUD may range from application of detoxification to cognitive and behavioral therapies. I will also go even further to examine if genetics could be a factor contributing to the severity of the condition so that I may provide the most appropriate treatment. Section 2 – Team STEPPS
Which concept did you choose?
Huddle is the best TeamSTEPPS concept that I would utilize in my PMHNP field.
Why did you choose it?
Huddles or coming together and reasoning are great tools that can be used in any healthcare setting. Things may turn out differently than expected, regardless of how intensive the prior planning was. A huddle is a great way to reassess and plan for success, and it can be used on an as-needed basis. This may help in dealing with any unexpected issue or rise of any critical concerns from the patients. This is my best strategy because, firstly, an SUD patient may be so severe that they are unable to control their thinking and behaviors. Hence, it may be unable to control the patient as the only caregiver. Calling for a huddle will then be the best solution, as such unexpected variables, as the team of nurses, will quickly come up with different opinions of arresting the situation and helping the patient (Troendle, 2023). Besides, it will significantly help me in areas where I need to make necessary changes. By calling for a huddle, I will come up with the best solutions at the best time possible.
