Social Detriments of Health Discussion

Reply to this post 1. The social detriments of health are the conditions from all aspects of life in our environment that affects our health and quality of life as a whole. It makes sense that the factors in the big picture of things affect us more personally and influences the small details that shape our health. I was aware that stress is a major contributor to the social detriments of health, but I learned that stress affects individuals differently across many cultures and so the impact on health varies as well. Another thing I learned was that your social environment is also another detriment to your health. The makeup of your surroundings that immediately impact your decisions that are unfavorable have negative a health impact. Last thing I learned was that migrants that come to the United States tend to become unhealthy overtime compared to their counterparts in the same biological circumstances back in their country of origin. This is called the Healthy Migrant Effect, and it is believed to be caused by the lack of available resources the in location where individuals migrated to. 2. I live in Miami Beach, near South Beach where contradictory ways of life affect the public health. This is a very trendy and party heavy environment that doesn’t always lead to the healthiest decisions to be made; STIs, drugs and alcohol are social detriments to our health. On the other hand, this city is also very health conscious with healthy food options, gyms, city bike and with access to healthcare to even those who lack the financial means. 3. Nurses and others in public health departments can help improve the health of the public and the community in various ways. Education to the public is important, it allows for future decisions to be made with the proper knowledge and helps reduce misconceptions. This of course spans into many areas such as nutrition, promoting of yearly check-ups, and advocating for a healthier lifestyle. 4. Knowing that social detriments to health are so vast and varied, it helps to know what to look for so while in everyday practice I could help educate and bring awareness to the issues at hand. As a nurse in everyday practice I would be promoting healthy lifestyle habits, providing information on access to healthcare when resources are limited, and encouraging health screenings to be made more often than naught. Addressing the SDOH to promote public health serves the same purpose as achieving health equity by examining the presence of and reducing health inequities in accessing care based on the SDOH wit time. I also learned about the Healthy Migrant Effect, which has today played a huge role in causing health disparities. First-generation migrants to the US are healthier in comparison to Americans from the same ethnic background born in the US. However, over time, the health status of immigrants tends to diminish drastically. According to Islam (2019), the most notable primary factors associated with the deterioration of the health status of immigrants are lack of proper housing, lack of access to healthcare, substance use, and abuse, and adopting American dietary practices. These factors are the SDOH. Social Detriments of Health Discussion

The video also acknowledges Healthy People 2020 as a good strategy for addressing the SDOH. This health initiative provides a nationwide strategy to increase the health span of Americans, reduce and eliminate health disparities, and promote access to preventive healthcare. In everyday practice, public health nurses can also take part in monitoring population health. This entails documenting health data over a specific period for individuals, population subgroups, and communities. Islam (2019) suggests that it also entails analyzing inequities and differences in health based on vital societal and individual characteristics that nurses can influence change through policy and social interventions. Taking part in recording and analyzing data creates an opportunity for PHN s to improve their understanding of the integral reasons to initiate change in population health or systemic health inequities and disparities among ethnic groups or geographic areas through policy.
