Research, Role, and Values
According to Maier et al. (2018), registered nurses assume multiple professional roles. Among these roles are providers of care and care coordinators. As direct providers of care, nurses interact with patients for diagnosis and treatment. In the process of providing patient care, nurses record the medical histories of patients, monitor their health and record vital signs, operate medical equipment, administer medication, and educate patients on managing their illnesses. On the other hand, coordinators of care assist patients by supporting them and enabling them to navigate the medical system to obtain care and treatment required to prevent readmissions. Nursing care coordinators are specialized in organizing patient care in a way that engages all stakeholders.
Evidence-based practice, research, and theory knowledge relate to the roles of nurses as providers of care and care coordinators. The evidence-based practise offers providers of care with empirical research, ultimately enabling them to make informed clinical decisions during patient care (Li et al., 2019). Through EBP, providers of care are updated on the current protocols of patient care and can, therefore incorporate best practices that advance patient care. Coordinators of care use the concepts of evidence-based practice to design patient care in a way that integrates patient values and preference in treatment plans. Here, patients are considered equal partners in care. Research also influences the role of nurses as providers and coordinators of care. It allows nurses to determine efficient best practices that improve patient care. With research, nurses can discover new treatment protocols and innovative approaches that advance health outcomes. Theory knowledge also relates to the role of nurses as providers and coordinators of patient care. It allows nurses to test existing hypotheses relating to patient care.
Caring is a critical professional nursing value that involves trusting the patient and being interested in their wellbeing. In nursing practice, caring encompasses knowing the patient, provision of compassionate care, and empathetic listening. Caring and nursing are intertwined, that one would not exist without the other. The inclusion of evidence-based practice in caring allows care providers to formulate clinical decisions that are founded on scientific evidence. EBP will enable providers to deliver care that is compassionate and empathetic. Nurse providers search for documented care delivery approaches that align with individual patient profiles.
Among the reasons I chose to pursue BSN are to enhance my professional role as a provider of care, and provide patient-centred care that is grounded on patient values, preferences, and expressed needs. According to the American Association for Colleges of Nursing (2008), BSN-prepared nurses are more equipped to provide patient-centred care and act as the human chain between the healthcare system and the patient. Other reasons behind my pursuit of a BSN degree are to contribute to the nursing profession, offer better patient care, and advance my professional leadership skills.
My reasons for pursuing a BSN degree compares to caring, a professional nursing value that guides my practice. I consider it my passion to care for the sick and be the very best at it. This passion was the key driver in my pursuit of a BSN degree in nursing. Research suggests that BSN prepared nurses to provide better patient care (Audet et al., 2018). Nurses with higher education are associated with positive patient outcomes, few medication errors, and low rates of mortality due to their level of education and clinical expertise.
