Moral agency is normally learned and thus to be a moral agent, nurses must actively participate or come into contact with individuals or experiences involving the moral agency. Nurses also act as moral agents when faced withethical dilemmas. All healthcare practitioners have the ultimate goal of improving the health of people and society (Welsh&Ordóñez, 2016). Therefore, nurses need to have a personal moral/ethical framework that forms the basis of their practice and professional relationships. The purpose of this paper is to explore and develop a foundation for ethics and leadership in my professional practice. This will involve reflecting on the sources, nature, and implications of my values, ethical perspectives, and beliefs that guide my individual life and nursing profession at large.Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership .
Every person has a set of ethics that offer the fundamental principles that the individual distinguishes between what is morally acceptable or unacceptable. Various factors shape one’s ethical values and beliefs. Immediate childhood and adult influences are among the factors that strongly shape and influence an individual’s ethical values. Personally, my childhood upbringing significantly shaped my ethical values and beliefs. I grew up with my mother and her family who had and still have numerous virtues that have shaped who I am today. My mother and her family are the types of people who are always honest, truthful, and value integrity. As a result, since childhood, I was trained to always tell the truth regardless of the consequences. My mother always insisted on doing the right thing regardlessof who is watching. These are some of the values I have maintained even in my adulthood. Moreover, my mother is very hardworking and values education. As a result, I have always focused on giving my best in whatever I am doing. My mother’s favorite quote has always been “whatever you are doing, do it like it is the last thing you are doing; give it your best.” As a result, I always out the maximum efforts in whatever I am doing, be it academic, work, or any other activity. My mother and her family value kindness and are always compassionate and considerate towards all people.Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership . They are always willing to help or save a situation whenever they can. I picked these values, and this significantly contributed to choosing the nursing career. I felt that by being in the nursing profession, I would be able to help people in need and improve their health. As Welsh &Ordóñez (2016)explain, children learn ethics from their parents, and thus the parents’ teachings significantly influence the most fundamental beliefs and attitudes regarding what is right and wrong. Being surrounded by positive people like my mother and her family during my adulthood has also shaped my values. For example, my maternal family is highly educated and this has pushed me to pursue further education. They are also hardworking and as a result I always industrious in both academics and at my workplace as well. According to Welsh&Ordóñez (2016), adulthood experiences may directly or consciously influence an individual’s ethics. Ethical Principles that Influence me Personally and Professionally
My ethical principles that normally influence my personal and professional life include “to be good, to think good, and act good.” My beliefs and values are based on a personal conviction that by going good things, having positive thoughts, and affirmatively choosing my words and actions can improve goodness in the world. As a result, I always ensure that whenever I am interacting with people at a personal level, I can touch their lives positively. However, being a human being sometimes I tend to be over-emotional and over-react when interacting with people. This is an aspect I am working hard to change by trying to improve my emotional intelligence. My ethical principles about doing good have positively influenced my professional life. During my working hours, I always do my best during care provision and when interacting with my colleagues and leaders. These values have positively shaped my professional life because I can work with diverse people and collaborate effectively with different members of the multidisciplinary team. Developing collaborative practice settings requires effort and understanding that we are diverse (Barkhordari-Sharifabad et al., 2017). As a result, I have always ensured that I see good in everything despite the differences and challenges I may be facing in both personal and professional settings. Ethical Practice of Professional Nursing
Ethical values are fundamental for nurses because nurses handle ethical issues daily during practice. During practice, ethical dilemmas arise and at times the dilemmas conflict with the nurse’s ethical values or the code of ethicsBipeta, 2019). As a result, nurses being patients’ advocates need to find balance during care provision.
I normally work with people with mental disorders, multi-personality, substance use disorder, co-occurring dual diagnoses, and patients who are suicidal and homicidal. This is a group of patients that requires a lot of understanding, compassion, and at the same time being decisive if need be. Dealing with patients with mental disorders has taught me to be more compassionate and understanding especially when I get to hear what they go through, and the stigma and challenges they face due to mental illness. People with mental illness often face isolation and thus they need compassion and empathy (Bipeta, 2019). As a result, I have become more empathic as I try to fit in their shoes. Moreover, I have become more patient. This is because, in my line of work, patients with mental illness requires a lot of persistence and endurance. However, regardless of the patience, understanding and compassion are essential when working with this patient population, sometimes one has to be decisive. There are times when as a nurse, one has to make a decision that goes contrary to the code of ethics.Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership . For example, sometimes people with mental illness may resist treatment, and thus against the ethical principle of autonomy, forceful treatment may be necessary. This requires one to be decisive and determined. Moreover, in mental health, the patient-therapist relationship is bound by the ethical and moral inviolability of confidentiality (Bipeta, 2019). The nursing profession requires effective leadership to ensure that the staff are motivated and nurses can offer high-quality care. My values and beliefs have thus shaped my leadership qualities. My personal vision is to be a transformational leader to be able to share my vision, motivate followers, gain commitment, and inspire performance (Boamah et al., 2018). Generally, I am a compassionate person who always wants the best for others and thus as a leader, I would mentor and inspire the team to become better and improve. Additionally, I am keen to motivate and inspire others by giving them goals that I feel are suitable and within their abilities; this provides people with varied interests and inspires them to improve themselves and increase their interests. My ethical values that include hard work, honesty, trustworthiness, being approachable, supportive, and competent significantly influence my targeted leadership style. If I can meet the criteria of being compassionate, understanding, hardworking, supportive, and competent, I will be a credible leader or manager. The reason for this is because a leader who is competent and confident has abilities and competencies that are obvious to followers. However, as a leader, I am too soft-hearted, and thus many times I am not as decisive and affirmative as I should be. For example, sometimes I sympathize with people so much and thus I may not be able to be firm with them even though they are on the wrong. Moreover, sometimes I am too friendly and thus I might end up showing favoritism to those close to me. Evidence indicates that a good leader should be assertive and should judge followers and the team, depending on their performance, irrespective of personal feelings(Weiss &Tappen, 2015). A good leader should make decisions that may not be likable to the team but in the best interests of the organization.
