Scholarly Activities

Overview

The scholarly activity was a nursing journal club whose members were drawn from nurses working within the environs of Houston, Texas. The club has 24 members and pursues the objective of increasing nursing knowledge of members and improving professional practice by discussing selected health care topics with club members. The journal club meetings are held once every month and offer members the opportunity to reflect on their professional practice, and share ideas and insights in a sociable and relaxed setting. In addition, each meeting engages the services/presence of a mentor/facilitator who guides the club discussions as well as the content and its application. Before every meeting, the club members propose and choose a new nursing research article from a current journal issue. The article is distributed to the club members who prepare discussion points and commentaries about the article to get the club meetings started.

Problem

As earlier indicated, the purpose of the journal club was to act as an informal education meeting in which nurses discuss current problems and articles. Professional Nursing: Concepts & Challenges Essay. The club meetings provide a forum for a collective effort to ensure that the club members keep up with current literature and issues. The meetings specifically solved three problems: determining nursing practice changes that improve care outcomes; discussing evidence and information provided; and reviewing current nursing literature. In fact, the club meetings are an opportunity to improve knowledge as the members read current publications on nursing topics by lending structure and formality to important conversations about nursing care, supported by current literature.

Solution

Over the last five months, the journal club meetings have mainly focused on the position that nurses can play in addressing the Covid-19 epidemic within the city, state and nation. There was a general consensus that nurses can extend their services beyond the primary point of care. It was specifically noted that misinformation has been a source of concern in addressing the epidemic with populations engaging in risky behaviors simply because they have been provided the wrong information. Nurses can address this concern by leveraging the internet and social media forums to educate the public and engage them in discussions on how to improve their health. Using social media ensures that nurses can still communicate with the public while observing the social distancing requirements (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020).

Opportunity

The journal club meetings offer opportunities that can be captured by the club members. Firstly, it improves communication and presentation skills. Secondly, it is an opportunity to debate evidence, stay current and learn from each other. Thirdly, it creates a community of practice that helps to promote dialogue and interaction among nurses. Fourthly, it shortens that gap between knowledge and practice. Finally, it promotes professional reading among nurses by keeping them up to date with current clinical knowledge and research (Black, 2020).  Professional Nursing: Concepts & Challenges Essay.

Program Competencies Addressed

The scholarly activity addresses the five mission critical competencies. Firstly, it ensures effective communication through exposing the club members to nursing taxonomies and terminologies within professional communication. The members are expected to prepare and make presentations that offer persuasive arguments while engaging in respectful, assertive and clear discussions. Secondly, it ensures critical thinking through requiring the members to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the scientific evidence presented in nursing publications. Thirdly, it ensures a deeper understanding of Christian and religious worldviews by allowing members to examine the ethical, moral and spiritual issues affecting nursing care delivery. Also, it ensures that decisions can be evaluated from different perspectives. Fourthly, it ensures global awareness, perspectives and ethics by focusing on the human experience across the health continuum. The meetings discuss nursing problems that can present as health disparities and determinants of health. Finally, it ensures leadership as members develop knowledge and skills associated with the professional nursing roles, to include setting priorities and time management.
