The following are seven practicum objectives for the PMHNP who must attend to at least six patients a day. They are relevant to child, adolescent, and family rotations, and are linked to corresponding Measurable Learning Outcomes.

  1. Conduct an initial clinical interview with a child, adolescent, and their families in three cases. I will conduct this interview while integrating the Christian worldview in reassuring the clients and their families that God is in charge of their condition and that he would hear their prayers to be well again. My focus will be to get the subjective history of the present mental illness in the child or adolescent, but with full realization that the historian will be a parent or guardian. I will accomplish this task by posing targeted questions that would lead to getting information on the onset of the illness, its symptoms and their severity, any medications currently being taken, the social history, the medical history, the family history, immunization history, and birth history amongst others (Sadock et al., 2015; AA, 203).
  2. Make a diagnosis of at least 3 psychiatric illnesses in a child or adolescent and involving their families in the treatment planning. I will achieve this by drawing on my knowledge of pathophysiology, genetic etiological factors, and other causative factors of mental illness. Proper diagnosis will require that the clinical impression be aligned with the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 (Sadock et al., 2015; APA, 2013).
  3. Plan and write the treatment of 2 psychiatric patients (a child or an adolescent) whose diagnoses were made in objective (2) above. I will come up with the best available evidence-based psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions to treat the two patients each day. This requires that I be conversant with the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of psychopharmacologic agents. I must also know the expected effect of psychotherapeutic treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and family therapy. I will also need to reassure and counsel the family as well as give them health promotion on mental illness prevention (Corrigan, 2016; Sadock et al., 2015; APA, 203).   4. Demonstrate interdisciplinary collaboration by working as a team with the other healthcare professionals in the clinic. I will evaluate the needs of 4 child and adolescent patients and their families. This will mean that I assess their cultural, ethical, spiritual, physical, mental, socioeconomic, and legal convictions and worries to determine whether I will need to refer to a member of the interdisciplinary team such as the physician (Corrigan, 2016; Sadock et al., 2015).
  5. Evaluate care and provide a follow-up plan for 3 patients and their families. I will review their treatment and management in general to see if they need to be discharged. Then I will liaise with the other healthcare professionals such as the social worker to find out and plan how the patient and their family will be assisted to cope and reintegrate into the society. Health promotion and information on prevention will also be given (Corrigan, 2016; Sadock et al., 2015).
  6. To undertake health promotion and disease prevention for at least 4 patients daily. I will teach the patient and their family what to do to avoid mental illness or a relapse, but also how to remain healthy psychologically. This will be made possible by harnessing the electronic health record (EHR) technological system’s capability to permit data mining of the patient’s history and clinical data. I will use this technologically mined information about the patient to tailor their health promotion and prevention education (Corrigan, 2016; Sadock et al., 2015).
  7. Electronic documentation of the psychiatric records of 4 children and adolescents with mental illness. I will correctly enter and archive all the relevant patient data related to treatment in the EHR system of the facility. This archived information will enable proper decision making after analysis of available evidence (Corrigan, 2016).
