A piece of legislation that I would like to advocate

Nurses are important advocates for health policy and policy. Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (H.R.  1309) is an important piece of legislation that I would like to advocate.  The bill is a federal bill introduced by Representative Joe Courtney would make it mandatory for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to establish a national standard requiring social service and health care staff to develop and execute a comprehensive workplace violence prevention (WVP)  plan. The legislation was passed by the House late last year and it is currently in Senate. I would contact my senator and talk to him about the bill. I live in Texas State and my Senator is Rafael Edward Cruz. I would explain why it is important for him to vote for the bill and convince other senators to pass the bill. OSHA has the responsibility and authority to protect caregivers in American from workplace violence and presently no OSHA standard mandates employers to create and implement WPV plans that would assist lessen incidents of violence in the workplace and resultant physical and psychological harms among social service and health care workers. Unless legislators intercede, it is highly improbable that OSHA will take any tangible action to safeguard these workers in the near future. Emergency Nurses Association (2019) alleges that there are OSHA guidelines to protect social service and health care workers from violence, OSHA does not have any laws that employers must abide by. As such, employers do not comply with the guidelines and might fail to assess potential risk for assault, and support workers to deal with address or prevent potential violence. I believe that violence can be averted when employers develop plans tailored to fit the risks at every unit and every workplace with the contribution of nurses and other staff.Policy Advocacy Project Overview Essay.

Why the legislation is important

This piece of legislation is of great importance given that social service and health care workers frequently experience workplace violence. Workplace violence refers to any verbal abuse, threatening behavior, or physical assault or physical assault happening in the work setting. According to Sharma and Sharma (2016),   health care workers are at a high risk of experiencing workplace violence as a result of their contact with patients who are mentally ill or have a history of violence. Nurses are frequently exposed to violence majorly from patients, visitors, patient’s families, and also members of the health care team.  The violence can be in the form of harassment, beatings, intimidation, stalking, shootings, and stabbings.Policy Advocacy Project Overview Essay.

Psychological consequences of violence include frustration fear, low job satisfaction, and loss of trust with the employer. According to Phillips (2016), numerous studies have revealed that after an incident of violence in the work setting, there are high rates of absenteeism, job dissatisfaction,  as well as decreased productivity feelings of lack of safety among members of the staff.  Injuries connected to workplace violence leads to conger absences from work compared to other injuries.Policy Advocacy Project Overview Essay.

If enacted into law, the bill would provide social service and health care workers they protection they deserve by obliging OSHA to issue a provisional standard within twelve months and a  final standard within two years mandating employers within social service and health care sectors to develop and execute a WVP plan to avert violence before it occurs. The employers will also be required to provide training for employees and institute incident reporting and investigation mechanisms. The l legislation would safeguard public sector social service and health care staff in the states not presently covered by OSHA.Policy Advocacy Project Overview Essay.
