Philosophies and Nursing Science Essay

Part of the work of this course is the exploration of the philosophical basis for nursing practice. “Philosophy of science in nursing explores the meaning of truth, the meaning of evidence, and the meaning of life through praxis\” (Polifroni, 2011, p. 11). This paper is a discussion about the choice of one philosophical underpinning, and how it relates to the way we come to know in our nursing practice though the lens of a chosen aspect of your nursing story. This effort requires knowledge of the philosophical underpinnings of: positivism, post-positivism, critical theory, and constructivism. These basic philosophic belief systems have influenced the development of nursing theory and our nursing practice.

Nursing is one of the most complex profession when it comes to the healthcare sector as nurses are expected to go beyond simple observation and decode other patients’ signs that are vital in the overall care dissemination that is filled with love and attention. To achieve this, a nurse is expected to adopt a certain philosophy that accomplishes their professional know-how, as well as the knowledge gained through experience in the overall quest of meeting the patient needs (Sandra & Svensson, 2018). This essay will focus on my nursing story and the philosophical underpinnings on it in regard to constructivism. Philosophies and Nursing Science Essay.

The Underpinning Philosophy That Fits the Way I Nurse

Every nurse professional is expected to adopt a philosophy in their course of duty to assist in the attention and relationship between them and the patients at hand. As such, my way of working is based on the philosophy of constructivism which dictates that learning is a process and it involves upon bridging the knowledge gap by relating what one had learned earlier with the current experiences (Riedener, 2019). With this in mind, my nursing practice is based on the principle that apart from what I learn during my course as a nurse, I also need to strive and gain more knowledge, either from my experience colleagues through information sharing, as well as interaction with the patient.

Constructivism supports human learning through construction upon which new knowledge is gained by linking from the previous learning. Therefore, as I continue gaining experience by facing different challenging situations, am able to gain more knowledge on how to manage diverse nursing situations as I continue to get more exposure in the care management (Sandra & Svensson, 2018). Furthermore, the constructivism principle also provides me with an open mind where am left with the choice of methodology application that fits each unique case for the best results in patient care and management.

The Relationship of Constructivism, The Interprofessional Collaboration and The Overall Knowledge Gain

During my interaction with other professionals in my nursing career, I have come to embrace the interprofessional collaboration (Chiocchio et al., 2016). As a nurse, I need to cooperate with other professionals with different knowledge on certain medical issues in order to offer a comprehensive care that is beyond just the normal observation. With this in mind, and through the guidance of my philosophical underpinning of constructivism, I have gained more knowledge and am able to connect quickly with the patients and direct them to the best action at the time. This has not only made my work easier, but as well it has led to quality improvement and timely delivery of the much-needed care.

Bearing in mind the trends and challenges of our today’s global situation, it is vital for a nursing profession as I am to equip themselves with knowledge across the board in order to face the situations with a zeal to disseminate the needed patient care management. Philosophies and Nursing Science Essay. With this in mind, it is good to learn new things, emerging trends, as well as sharing information as professionals to ensure that learning is achieved properly and the knowledge gaps have been tightened for a better healthcare management (Sandra & Svensson, 2018).

The Ontological and Epistemological Beliefs That Are Associated with The Paradigm That Underpins My Nursing Story

Ontological and epistemological beliefs are familiar with nursing professional where the nurses involve themselves with the creation of the knowledge, how to obtain it and finding out the best way to disseminate care (Andotra & Sharma, 2016). Apart from the interprofessional collaboration that ensures knowledge gain and information sharing among the professionals, I have come to realize that patients themselves are also a source of knowledge and their way of life, including personality aspects, cultural background, as well as family settings may dictate the care management methodology (Sandra & Svensson, 2018). Observation of the ethical standards and the strict adherence to the professional code of conduct align together with the ontological and epistemological beliefs and thus any creation of the knowledge, how to obtain it and finding out the best way to disseminate care must all be guided by the same.

My Prominent Way of Knowing

In my entire nursing story, I hold epistemology as the most prominent way of knowing or gaining knowledge (Andotra & Sharma, 2016). Am always excited by knowledge about social reality and as such, I do a lot of research on nursing issues to familiarize myself with the matters that pertains to the profession, as well as those that purely relate to the patient care management. Having gained some experience with the patient care, it has always been my humble duty to give the best out of me through the full exercise of the profession and as well, collaborating with other professionals to perform the service delivery at its best (Sandra & Svensson, 2018).Philosophies and Nursing Science Essay.

Conclusion

In a recap, nursing philosophies are essential in dictating the conduct and knowledge gaining methodology when it comes to patient care management. However, any philosophical underpinning must be informed and guided by the nursing code of conduct, ethical guidelines as well as the institutional policies. This ensures professionalism in care management and as well, it eliminates application of a philosophical underpinning that does not take into account the importance of quality care and management jeopardizing the already much needed care by the involved patients.
