The first message is that nurses should practice at the top of their training and education. Nurses can lead innovative strategies aimed at improving the healthcare system but a range of policy, regulatory, and historical barriers have restricted their capability to produce widespread change. The second message is that nurses should attain higher training and education levels via an enhanced education system that promotes flawless academic progression. According to IOM (2011), key transformations in the practice environment and health care system will necessitate equally intense transformations in nurses’ education before and after they get licensure. The third message is that nurses should wholly collaborate with doctors and other health care providers in redesign health care in the country. For the realization of the vision of a reformed health care system, strong leadership is vital. To be actively involved in the achievement of this vision, the profession of nursing is supposed to produce leaders, from the boardroom to the bedside (IOM, 2011). The last message is that effective planning of the workforce and making policy requires the improved collection of data along with an improved information infrastructure. Attaining a reform of the practice environment and health care system will need a balance of perspectives among nurses, physicians, and other providers. Nevertheless, strategic planning of the health care workforce to attain this balance is impeded by lack of data that is adequately reliable and granular (IOM, 2011).
The messages have directly influenced nursing practice because several state and federal actions have been taken to standardize or update the scope of practice regulations. for instance, several states have revised their scope of practice laws to allow nurses to practice independently. As indicated by Altman et al. (2016), since the release of the IOM report, numerous states, including Minnesota, Maryland Nebraska, Nevada, and Vermont have amended their laws to all nurse practitioners to practice and prescribe autonomously.
The direct influence the IOM report has on nursing education and nursing leadership and the benefits and opportunities for BSN‐prepared nurses
The IOM report has made more nurses achieve higher education and take on leadership roles in their workplaces. The number of students who have enrolled in baccalaureate accelerated baccalaureate, and baccalaureate programs have risen significantly since the report was released. Additionally, there has been significant growth in the number of nursing programs, in particular, four-year college programs. There has been the establishment and expansion of opportunities in leadership by nursing associations, nursing education programs, and private associations.
BSN-prepared nurses can gain from nurse residency programs that can support their transition to practice. According to Altman et al. (2016), there has been an establishment or expansion of nurse residency programs following the release of the report in 2010. The rapid increase of older populations, together with a momentous and evolving rise in racial and ethnic diversity, will be recognized in the United States from now to 2060. According to Billings et al. (2019), although the real growth rate can just be predicated on an approximate of net global migration, census trends illustrate increasing diversity in the composition of the United States’ many communities. With an increasing collection of data concerning the diverse populations of the country, special and necessary interest has been paid to meet the varied needs of the citizens and increase the diversity of the health care workforce.
The significance of lifelong learning, and its relevance in caring for diverse populations across the life span and within the health‐illness continuum
Lifelong learning is significant because nurses need to update their knowledge and skills for delivering care in community-based and hospital settings. The profession of nursing depends on lifelong learning to sustain the professional collectively and individually, and also to promote and advocate for the tools and resources required to provide care to patients. According to Kroning (2016), the nursing profession is very demanding and a lot of knowledge along with ongoing learning is required for nurses to be able to provide compassionate, safe, and competent care. Everything that nurses offers an opportunity to learn and nurses continue learning about emerging diagnostic testing, technologies, and medications. Nurses are required to learn to advocate for healthcare at home and across the globe.
How nurses can assist in effectively managing patient care within an evolving health care system
The healthcare system is experiencing speedy transformations that put emphasis n quality of care, population health as well as the value of health care services delivered. Nurses can assist in effectively managing patient care within the evolving system by providing patient and family-centered care. Family and patient-centered care, instead of provider-centric care, is fundamental if families and patients are to take obligation for self-management. According to Salmond and Echevarria (2017), patient-centered care refers to health care that establishes a collaboration among patients, practitioners, and patients’ families(when appropriate) to make sure that decisions respect the preference, needs, and wants of patients and the patients are provided the support and education they required to make decisions and take part in their care.
