¨Introduction

¨Older adults are faced with myriad challenges resulting from their deteriorating body conditions. Although most of their body parts tend to begin getting weak, some conditions are treatable. Depression is one common disorder that worsens the situations. According to studies, depression affects 1-5% of the general elderly population (Krichbaum et al., 2015). That is quite a big population bearing in mind that depression is not a normal aging condition.Nursing Leadership and Advocacy Essay.

¨Since it affects a large population of seniors, depression warrants intervention. Fortunately, it is a treatable condition when the diagnosis is made. But the biggest challenge is the misdiagnosis because depression can at times mimic the normal age-related problems.

¨Advocacy actions to curb depression

¨Psychotherapy is a problem-solving intervention that aims at reducing depression among the old people (Krichbaum et al., 2015). Within the psychotherapy, intervention is another approach called the care manager-based intervention

¨While carrying out the intervention, addressing physical health and spiritual beliefs of the patient enhances the outcome of the intervention method

¨Advocacy Actions

¨A support group that aims at connecting older people with similar conditions is another intervention that helps in managing depression.Nursing Leadership and Advocacy Essay.

¨Such groups are beneficial in creating spaces that are safe to talk as well as establishing social support for the elderly (Pinheiro et al.,2015).

¨Future Actions

¨Older adults have an increased need for multidisciplinary healthcare services to provide the essential and continuous care. Collaboration between physicians, nurses, primary healthcare givers and the patient is necessary for effective healthcare for the older adults with depression.

¨Quality healthcare is always enhanced where there is collaboration. On the part of the patient, collaboration helps in reducing pain and sufferings from the condition and thus results in enhanced quality of life (Tsakitzidis et al., 2016)Nursing Leadership and Advocacy Essay.

¨Policy Change Proposal

¨Since depression among elderly mostly goes unrecognized, it would be of great benefit if the government enacts some legislation.

¨A policy that mandates regular screening of the elderly people for mental problems will be of great help. Elderly people suffer greatly not only from depression but also other mental problems including anxiety disorders (Krichbaum et al., 2015)

¨With such a policy, the healthcare providers will be able to diagnose and possibly treat depression at an early stage

¨Another important policy the government needs to consider is to prohibit elderly people from living alone
