The issue can be the topic you identified in the Module 1 Discussion, or it can be something entirely different. The best topics are issues you feel passionate about. For example, on the macro level, you may feel strongly that improving access to HIV medications in developing countries would improve the overall health of the population. On a more micro level, you may advocate for improving a contaminated water supply that has led to increased disease rates in your community. On both a micro and macro level, you may feel passionate about putting an end to human trafficking overall but have noticed there appear to be increased rates in your community. Both the micro and macro level are important; what you choose depends on your interests. Grassroots efforts led by small groups of people are often successful because their passion drives the cause. Consider this group in California (Links to an external site.) who created a “community fun run” to combat high rates of diabetes and heart disease in the community.Nursing- Community Health/ Letter to the Editor, Reducing Manufacturers of Illness The impact of grassroots efforts can be profound; as former Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill said: “All politics is local.” Your audience will determine where you should send your letter to the editor. If you are considering a national or global health issue, The New York Times or the professional journal Health Affairs may be appropriate. If you are looking at a community organization, your local newspaper may be appropriate. Assignment Instructions As you create your Letter to the Editor, incorporate the following steps: 1. In addition to submitting your letter here for grading, you are also asked to submit it to the publication that you chose. 7. Make sure you identify yourself as a College RN baccalaureate student

Letter to the Editor
To the Editor:
Tobacco, alcohol and fast foods are public health concerns. They are the biggest risk for communicable diseases. Firstly, there is increasing evidence suggesting that fast foods contain sugars, salts and fats that are important contributors of diverse harms, notably dental decay, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Statistics indicate that 1 in 10 children are obese on entering primary school, and the number increases to 1 in 6 children after six years of primary school. Secondly, tobacco has been associated with lung cancer and degeneration into using more addictive substances. Thirdly, alcohol has been associated with major health concerns such as liver cirrhosis and criminal activity. The diverse harms caused by tobacco, alcohol and fast foods are a major concern and we cannot afford to ignore them(Voon, Mitchell &Liberman, 2015).Nursing- Community Health/ Letter to the Editor, Reducing Manufacturers of Illness
The concern is that manufacturers of tobacco, alcohol and fast foods are engaging in denialism tactics that refuse to acknowledge the harmful influences of their products and marketing campaigns. Their inability to reform is demonstrated by their lack of willingness to conduct constructive discussions about reformulation and regulation that would present healthier products. Happily, this understanding about the tactics applied by the manufacturers is progressively being disseminated across wider policy areas. It is understandable that the manufacturers fear reforms as they would have their profits. However, increasing awareness about the situation, research, law suits, lobbies and focus groups keeps the public informed about the prevailing reality and the need for manufacturers to be pressured into presenting healthier product options (Voon, Mitchell &Liberman, 2015).Nursing- Community Health/ Letter to the Editor, Reducing Manufacturers of Illness
There is a need for the government to intervene in the issue by adopting legislation that prompt manufacturers to present healthier products and prevent them from adopting insidious marketing strategies. The government has a responsibility to address public health concerns and there is a need for their intervention in protecting the enjoyment of the public while preventing manufacturers from using their position to influencing public behaviors. Under the right to health, the government is especially required to protect the public from activities by manufacturers that would violate their right to health (Hill &Langan, 2014). In conclusion, the government should intervene through legislation.Nursing- Community Health/ Letter to the Editor, Reducing Manufacturers of Illness
