Nursing care of vulnerable populations- Uninsured individuals

How the three (social, distributive, market) concepts of justice affect the health of uninsured individuals

The health of uninsured individuals is greatly affected by social, distributive, and market justice. Social justice refers to a concern for the equitable gauging of burdens and benefits in society. It is concerned with the creation, maintenance, and support of equitable relationships, and also with the utilization of equitable practice, policies, and procedures. Market justice hypothesizes that individuals have entitlement only to those services and goods that they obtain according to the principles of entitlement. Distributive justice is defined in regard to the equal distribution of services and goods in society (De Chesnay & Anderson, 2019).Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay.

The concept of market justice puts the obligation of fair distribution of health care to the market forces within a free economy.  Medical care along with its benefits is distributed on basis of the ability and willingness of people to pay. According to Shi and Singh (2017), under market justice, health care is produced based on how much consumers are able and willing to purchase buy health care at the current market prices.  Therefore, prices and the capability to purchase ration the type and quantity of health care services that individuals consume.  The uninsured along with people who do not have adequate income to purchase private health care services face obstacles to getting health care. In the United States, the delivery of health care does not occur in a free market but health care is delivered in a quasi-market. Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay.

Under the concept of social justice, the fair distribution of health care is a responsibility of the society, which is achievable by allowing the government to control the production and distribution of health care. Shi and Singh (2017) indicate that social justice considers health care as a social good instead of an economic good that needs to be communally funded and availed to all citizens despite their capability to pay. In the United States, health care is not a social good and the uninsured are not able to get medical services due to lack of financial resources.  The distribution of health care is not based on need, but on the ability of an individual to buy such care in the marketplace.Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay.

Distributive justice is concerned with what is fair in regard to the allocation of health responsibility and risks. For instance, if all people were provided access to health insurance that is affordable, the United States health care system would be regarded to be under the guidance of the principle of distributive justice. However, this is not the case because the uninsured are not able to pay for and access health care (Hammaker & Knadig, 2017).Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay.

Enhancing social justice in advanced practice nursing

Social justice aims at resolving the health disparities among the population, entailing access to food, care, adequate housing, access to education, and the existence of a social safety net.   Social justice can be enhanced in advanced practice nursing through policy advocacy. According to Williams et al. (2018), economically and socially disadvantaged individuals in society are the most impacted by public policy and thus can reap the most benefits from policies designed to improve social conditions that influence health.Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay. The suitable social systems and health policies can disrupt the cycle of disadvantage, poverty, and subsequent poor health by addressing insufficient material and social resources essential for improved health.   Advanced practice nurses have a primary obligation of advocating for policies to improve social conditions shaping the well-being of disadvantaged and poor individuals.  Nurses can advocate for the correct social policies to promote health equity, fairness justice, and sufficiently address social determinants of health.Nursing care of Vulnerable Populations Essay.
