Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a model applied in project management to help with directing the project from its inception to completion. Planning is the first stage of SDLC whereby focus is on directing the project with implications for the model’s successive stages. Nurse informaticists engaged at this stage have the role of helping to define the scope of the problem being addressed by the project. In addition, they help with identifying and exploring the potential solutions to be applied in the intervention project, to include the information associated with each solution, the resources that would be required, and the timeline required for each potential solution to achieved milestones. There is an expectation that they (nurse informaticists) would use their knowledge of clinical processes and medical workflows, and critical thinking skills to explore the problem’s root cause, and set realistic expectations for the solution. Analysis is the second stage of SDLC whereby focus is on prioritizing the needs of the project in terms of resources. It explores the identified solution and evaluates the possible alternative systems while recommending the features that the selected features must have. This helps with ensuring that the project meets organizational and user needs. Nurse informaticists engaged in this stage help with analyzing the communication and decision-making aspects of the project, as well as implications for workflow processes. Besides that, they analyze the technical requirements of the project in terms of the hardware, software, space and staffing. Design of the new system
New system design is the third stage of the SDLC whereby focus is on ensuring that the project is properly configured to include its architecture and operation. Nurse informaticists engaged in this stage help with reinforcing the primary purpose of the project while incorporating peripheral and important issues such as care quality and safety. The nurses are mainly involved with customizing the project to ensure that it meets the unique and specific needs of the organization (Wager, Lee & Glaser, 2017).
Implementation is the fourth stage of the SDLC whereby focus is on testing and implementing the project. Nurse informaticists engaged in this stage help with presenting a nurse training plan, maintenance plan for the project, and a plan for evaluating the project outcomes. In addition, they help with ensuring that nurses have an awareness of the project and their opinions are presented to the team managing the project. Also, they help with collecting project performance details that are applied in redesigns to customize, optimize and adapt the project to improve outcomes. Besides that, they identify workflow concerns in the project and offer solutions (Garcia-Dia, 2019).
Post-implementation support is the fifth stage of the SDLC whereby focus is on supporting the system to continue functioning at efficient and optimized levels. Nurse informaticists engaged in this stage help with ensuring that the project continues to function as intended even as users are trained on its unique features.
