NURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING

BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 1

Post a description of the focus of your scenario. Describe the data that could be used and how the data might be collected and accessed. What knowledge might be derived from that data? How would a nurse leader use clinical reasoning and judgment in the formation of knowledge from this experience?

According to Walden University (2018) informatics blends technology and information otherwise known as data, that we can use to impact our nursing care (Walden University, 2018). Nurses use their acquired knowledge to collect and assess data that will come from subjective information and objective information while using technology to gather information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022) NURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING.

At my current place of employment data is being collected regarding our telehealth usage via two different platforms. Currently, we can utilize telehealth through MyAspirus accounts that patients must create, or we use a separate platform named doxylink that is emailed to the patient. Aspirus would like to integrate into one platform through EPIC and increase usage of MyAspirus accounts. Aspirus has initiated telehealth via EPIC by sending an email link directly from the patients account to their corresponding email and want to eliminate doxylink. Our clinic is collecting data to show that we need to have a backup option outside of EPIC. Some of the data in this collection is how many patients a provider is seeing that day, any technical issues faced with only using EPIC and the email link from EPIC vs. Doxylink, the resolution, timeframe spent on resolving issues if resolved, and patient E number (their identification).

McGonigle & Mastrian (2022) state that we would then use this data and transform it into useful information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). In this case, our hopes are that nurse leaders would use this knowledge to advocate for keeping a backup system for our telehealth patients NURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING. Or it could have the opposite effect and Aspirus and other nurse leaders will look at our data and determine that they have further work to do on the technology side of things, so we do not have all these issues. Nagle et al (2017) claims that “by 2018, 22 million households will use virtual care solutions” (Nagle et al, 2017, p. 212). This data can prove useful for improving the technology we use for telehealth. The American Hospital Association (2022) states that telehealth or virtual care is improving healthcare value, affordability, and “saving patients time money, reduces patient transfers, emergency department and urgent care center visits, and delivers savings to payers” (AHA, 2022).

BY DAY 6 OF WEEK 1

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, asking questions to help clarify the scenario and application of data, or offering additional/alternative ideas for the application of nursing informatics principles.

Hi XXX,

Telehealth is certainly a great way to reach people that may not have access to care. My own agency relies heavily on telehealth for patient care ( we are an in-home addiction agency) and during Covid there were times when almost all of our visits were telehealth (usually a zoom or google meet meeting).

I live in Maine, and while I am in the southern part of the state (which is more densely populated) there are areas in Northern Maine that are very remote. Telehealth can be a way for individuals who may not have immediate access to get the care they need. McDougal Ronconi et al., (2011) discuss the use of telehealth to provide access to care in rural Vermont to patients that otherwise may not have gotten the mental health care they neededNURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING.

Telehealth communication can also bring expertise to more rural areas. Pal et al (2021) discuss how communication through telehealth technology can give patients in rural areas the benefit of knowledge of more experienced oncology practitioners. Pal et al., (2021) point out that the mortality rate for a person with cancer in a rural area is greater than that for a city dweller. And they show how the use of technology can bring the expertise of a larger city hospital to the rural area.

Since I want to continue to live and work in Maine, the communicative aspect of nursing informatics will be very important.

NURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING sample response 2

Cahill, an excellent discussion! The discussion begins by depicting the impacts of nurse informatics on information and technology. It presents the roles of nurses in informatics such as collecting and assessing data coming from both objective and subjective sources. The effectiveness of nurses in using technology is highlighted in the discussion and termed as an essential practice towards data management and patient care. The discussion gives a real scenario in the workplace where data collection is done using telehealth platforms. For instance, a platform named doxylink is used by the patients which can be integrated into MyAspirus for ease of operations (Adane, 2019) NURS-6051N Week 1: Discussion THE APPLICATION OF DATA TO PROBLEM-SOLVING. An important aspect of these platforms is that they have the ability to form a backup to safeguard patients’ data.

The discussion provides that the data collected using these platforms involve the number of patients that visits the healthcare facility in a day. Also, technical issues that are experienced during the day are recorded, including the patient’s identification numbers. The discussion is also clear about the use of data in transforming major areas in the healthcare setting. For instance, the data is said to be valuable to nurse leaders in giving them knowledge concerning how to back up crucial healthcare data. In addition, nurses can reference these data during their daily patients’ care for improved care. The discussion brings important data about the future of data collection technology such that many households will be using these platforms for care solutions in the future (Nibbelink et al., 2018). Additionally, there is an important discussion about the need for health data in improving telehealth through enhancing affordability, healthcare value, time-saving, reducing the transfer of patients, and helping in emergency care.
