One of the most significant risks with big data is ensuring the protection of health information and abiding by HIPAA law. As more data is collected and stored electronically, a threat of privacy being breached exists. As big data grows and continues to be an asset in the health industry, regulations will be put in place to maintain privacy and security (Barton, 2016).


One strategy to help with the challenges includes investing in an electronic medical record program that allows for customized assessments and reports. This will allow for assessments to be customized to meet the facility’s needs; customizations such as checkboxes vs. fill-in-the-blank vs. paragraph forms for documentation can help capture the facility’s specialized care. These specialized assessments and reports could potentially help capture patient acuity to support the need for additional staffing. Nurses’ input and feedback regarding how electronic systems support their work is essential to the future of healthcare (Glassman, 2017). The nurse possesses insight into how the electronic documentation system affects workflow and patient outcomes.

The use of big data to help collect valuable terabytes of information is important to our health care organizations is beginning to understand where the risk and challenges are.   You mention that nursing informatics plays a crucial role in identifying technology to help the needs of these facilities but also help take this raw data and begin to make sense of it.  The vast amount of information in itself is just data points on a table.  The information collected may detect unusually high infection rates,  patient population, location, and other pertinent information but I feel the challenge is then converting this information into useful information to do a root cause analysis and implement change to reduce those infections.  “Big data analytics need to be integrated into clinical practice to reap the substantial benefits, and clinical integration requires the validation of clinical utility of big data analytics(Lee & Yoon, 2017, p. 10).” You bring up a great point about privacy.  I have been part of a couple of big data breaches and ransom wear over the past couple of years and the cost is enormous.   Most breaches hold the data hostage with no overt plans on using it but just to collect on payment.   These breaches cost undisclosed amounts as most are paid off to get the data back.  It’s a very difficult situation to stop and mitigate these risks as email viruses, Trojans, and other malware are so easily installed on computers.   “Hacking/IT incidents have increased by 73.4% in 2019 from 2018. However, unauthorized internal disclosure, theft/loss, and improper disposal decreased by 0.7%, 7.8%, and 22.22%, respectively, from 2018 to 2019(Seh et al., 2020, p 16).” Even with this risk that is inherent the rewards are too great to be ignored.
