NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

By Day 3 of Week 1

Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Finally, explain why networking is important and how it may help you achieve your professional and academic goals.

My name is xx and I have been an RN in a Surgical/Trauma ICU and now recently working in Urgent Care after relocating due to my husband’s job to the Kansas City metro area. I am currently in the FNP program and hope to eventually end up as an Urgent Care nurse practitioner.

Walden’s Goals in Relation to my Goals

After reviewing Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives, it is evident that social change is the main driving force behind how Walden educates and sculpts its graduates (Walden University, 2022b). NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities My professional and academic goals also revolve quite a bit around social change and trying to be part of the solution for the community where I will be a scholar-practitioner. Social factors have a tremendous impact on health and healthcare (Walden University, 2022b). Being a part of this healthcare system, I feel it is my job to do my part in creating a space where all can receive quality care. I also appreciate how diverse the classes can be with people of different backgrounds, both culturally and within the nursing field. Diversity allows us all to grow, so I find it very beneficial to be able to read the thoughts of someone different than myself in discussions.

Walden MSN Program Outcomes in Relation to my Goals

The Walden MSN program outcomes align with many of my goals as a scholar-practitioner. Creating a space where my patients will be able to seek cost-effective healthcare is very important to me. I also have a plan to get involved in volunteering as a healthcare provider to help serve different populations and help make the community I will serve better. I want to be able to make all people comfortable with me as their provider and trust that I will take the best possible care of them. Technology has also become an integral part of our world and significantly impacts healthcare delivery (Walden University, 2022a) NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities. I appreciate how Walden incorporates technology into the program to get students more comfortable with different forms of technology to help better serve our patients.

Importance of Networking

Networking can sometimes make or break professional and academic goals. After completing the readings, I realized that hospital recruitment departments use employee referrals for much of their hiring (Schmidt, n.d.). I know I only looked for jobs that would be a professional networking experience when I knew I needed a new job due to my family’s relocation. I wanted a nursing job within a convenient care or urgent care setting since that is what I want to do as a nurse practitioner. I knew this would be an excellent opportunity to be around family nurse practitioners that would be able to share their knowledge with me and help me grow as a nurse and future nurse practitioner to assist with both my professional and academic goals. This position will also help me find preceptors for school and potentially a job in the future once I am nearing graduation.

NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities sample post 2

My name is Anh Nguyen. I am currently residing in Maryland with my family. I have been a bedside nurse for eleven years, starting as a staff nurse in the medical intensive care unit (ICU). After several years in the ICU, I transitioned to being a bedside float nurse working in the medical-surgical and telemetry inpatient units NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities.

After many years of working in the acute care setting, I started to think about advancing my nursing career with the professional goal of becoming a primary care nurse practitioner. After doing my research and receiving recommendations from colleagues, Walden University is the best match for me offering classes with flexibility for working nurses from all different backgrounds. I envision myself becoming one of the nursing professionals “who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity,” as stated in the mission of Walden University College of Nursing (Walden University, n.d.). My professional goal of becoming a primary care practitioner also allows me to continue providing patient-centered care and making a difference in patients’ lives. In addition, to make a difference in patients’ lives, I need to start making a difference in my nursing career. Walden’s emphasis on positive social change motivates me in the process of advancing my education to become “principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society” (Walden University, n.d.).

My Professional Goal and Walden University MSN Outcomes

I plan to use the knowledge and skills that I will obtain from Walden to provide care for patients in a different setting other than an acute setting. There are many options in primary care settings that advanced practitioners can contribute to healthcare. Becoming a partner with patients to manage, promote, and improve their health outcomes is another professional goal that I have. This goal is one of the outcomes that Walden outlines for its MSN graduates, “evaluate health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialist nursing knowledge to restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury” (Walden University, n.d.). Helping patients in primary care settings provides me insight into different aspects of care that I have not had the chance to experience NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion: Networking Opportunities.

My Professional Goal and the Importance of Networking

Networking plays a crucial role in helping me navigate through the program’s clinical component and obtain a job in the future. Before applying to Walden, one of my concerns was looking for clinical sites and preceptors. Part of the concern was due to my weak professional networking skill. I need to work on the active networking that Schmidt (n.d.) described as “the process of seeking out individuals to connect with.” To become successful on this journey, I decided to be more proactive in connecting with other nurses who either are in the same program or have already finished their education. I use one of the techniques Wofford (2018) offered, “utilizing family, friends, and classmates…in their network whom you should connect with.” My networking group gives words of encouragement, recommendations for clinical placement, and advice when looking for clinical sites and preceptors. As I slowly develop my skills to expand my networking group, I gain more confidence to move forward to achieve my professional goal.
