NURS 6003 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

Walden University

Nursing is my second career.  For 17 years I was a licensed educator with the State of Ohio working in the Department of Corrections.  I wanted to make a difference.  Teaching afforded me that opportunity, but not at a pace that I was satisfied with.  Practicing nursing allowed me to see a greater difference in a much shorter amount of time.  My first job was in the ER of a local Level II Trauma center.  I was easily able to gauge the difference I was making in people’s lives as we either sent them out the door or admitted them after stabilizing them.  It didn’t take long for me to get into travel nursing, but 2 years after that, I decided to move back to permanent.  I now reside on the island of Maui with my wife and dog.  Maui Health has been a good hospital with great staff and an incredibly diverse population. NURS 6003 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

The FNP program helps me continue advocating the “quality of care and outcomes for patients” (Walden University, 2020a, para. 2).  After working alongside many people on the provider end of healthcare, I decided that the Nurse Practitioner program would be a good fit for me.  With the onset of COVID-19 fear has gripped many.  Healthcare needs to be driven by “evidence-based literature drawing from diverse theoretical perspectives and pertinent research to guide decision making that demonstrates best practices” (Walden University, 2020b).

Social change is inevitable.  I feel that my background in a broad spectrum of professions: teaching, nursing, web development, etc allows me a unique perspective.  I count on Walden and my fellow students to develop my professional learning to assist me in the implementation of “immediate solutions of critical societal challenges” (Walden University, 2020c).  that this world is in need of.

Thank you for your excellent post. You bring a wealth of experience as an educator, and I am looking forward to reading more of your discussion post. I am an ER nurse working there full time for about five years, but now as-needed basis and now full-time in the behavioral health unit. Walden University is a great choice to pursue a scholar-practitioner career. It has a diverse community of career professionals with different backgrounds, enriching you with different ideas and skills (Walden University, 2021). As you mentioned, working as a nurse practitioner will allow us to continue to help our local communities as providers rather than as staff nurses. I am always grateful for the wonderful opportunities the nursing career has provided me, and the number of lives has helped me change and help. I am excited to continue with this journey with the wonderful professional at Walden University. NURS 6003 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

Discussion: Networking Opportunities

In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.

Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.

This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success. What a great point of view. I’m also a medical surgical nurse in the acute care setting and I couldn’t agree more that mental health is often overlooked or more so not addressed as much as it should. I would even go as far as saying that the preparation we get in nursing school and the resources we have in the hospital is limited. According to Dr. Glen Levin, “A person’s mind, heart, and body are all interconnected and interdependent in what can be termed ‘the mind-heart-body connection” (Hicks, 2021). Therefore, mental health is just as important and can have long lasting effects on other physiological systems. Can this overlook be because it’s not taken as seriously? Maybe we have not gotten the education and support to really get the conversation going so that we can better support our patient. NURS 6003 Discussion: Networking Opportunities

Regardless, your passion to address the cause and become a psychiatric nurse practitioner is inspiring because you will be a key to real change in the future. Being a nurse from Los Angeles, we definitely could use people like yourself who find opportunities to make strides in areas of need, most importantly in mental health.

response 2

I am so glad you made a point to mention the lack of quality patient care that mental health patients receive. This lack of care goes beyond the care given in hospital settings—it is also going on in outpatient facilities and even correctional facilities. Mental health is still frowned upon as if mental health disorders are not “real” diseases. I truly believe that if members of society and even medical staff received proper training and education, maybe suicide attempts and successful suicide numbers could be reduced. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and in 2019, 47,511 Americans died by suicide (Suicide Statistics, 2021). In 2019, there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts (Suicide Statistics, 2021). These statistics prove that mental health is a significant problem in the United States and these patients may be lacking resources and overall guidance and assistance.

Walden University’s MSN program seems to be a great fit for you as their goals and vision appear to resemble what you are looking for. Mental health is a very critical part of nursing, let alone life. “The MSN program offers a range of specializations in the most critical areas of nursing today,” (Master of Science in Nursing, 2020). Mental health and being a mental health nurse practitioner is a very critical and important specialization. I believe Walden University and all of its resources will help you reach your ultimate goal and I commend you for choosing this path in nursing! NURS 6003 Discussion: Networking Opportunities
