Academic and Professional Resources/Strategies

Introduction

Postgraduate studies entail self-directed study because students are expected to think critically, study independently, conduct research, and read extensively.  There are various resources designed to support both academic and professional student goals. This paper will discuss the academic and professional resources/strategies I intend to use during my MSN study.

Academic Resources

The academic resources I plan to use include Walden Library, Walden University Academic Skills Center, and Online Journals, Publications, and periodicals. I will use the Walden library to read and research for the assigned assignments and projects. The library contains a wide amount of information such as books, research papers, journal articles, and webinars (Dhakal, 2018). The library is accessible using the Walden University student portal. Additionally, there are skilled librarians and staff members available to help to answer certain questions and locate the relevant scholarly sources. Secondly, I will use the Walden University Academic Skills Center to develop and improve my writing skills.NURS 6003 Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 2.  The Center provides information about scholarly writing and the appropriate writing styles such as APA writing style. Through the Center, I will be able to watch webinars, locate paper templates, and have staff critique my writing (Darling-Hammond et al., 2020). Lastly, I intend to use Online Journals, Publications, and periodicals to conduct research and locate information for my assignment and resource work. I plan to use the latest journal articles and publications so that I access the latest evidence on a particular topic as they are very resourceful in providing reliable and latest evidence (Rao & Reddy, 2018). I will ensure that all journal articles I used are peer-reviewed.

 

Professional Resources

The professional resources I intend to use include the American Psychiatry Nurses Association; the American Nurses Association; and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners will support both my career and academics. The organization offers continuous education, up-to-date information, and also advocates for nurse practitioners (NPs) at the federal and state levels regarding policies and issues affecting the profession of NPs (Kleinpell et al., 2018). The organization also provides discounts during professional conferences, workshops, and liability insurance. I thus plan to engage in the professional continuous educational courses and conferences provided by the organization to develop professionally.

Secondly, since I am pursuing MSN to become a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, the American Psychiatry Nurses Association will be an important resource both academically and professionally. The organization is dedicated to the practice of mental health, prevention of mental health problems, promotion of wellness, and treatment and care of various mental health issues. I plan to use the organization as a resource to network, gain information, and disseminate research. I plan to attend online conferences and live chapter meetings held by the organization to improve my knowledge and develop professionally. The organization offers quality continuing education on mental health nursing and has a wealth of resources and skilled mental-health nurses (Bekhet et al., 2018). I will network and collaborate with the experience mental-health practitioners in the organization, engage in continuous education, and collaborate with consumer groups in promoting evidence-based on the latest research on prevention, diagnosis, management, treatment, and evaluation of individuals with substance use disorders and mental disorders.

Lastly, I will use the American Nurses Association to ensure my interests as a registered nurse are represented and to help me achieve my full potential. I plan to learn about the issues that affect nurses through this organization. I will thus attend the meetings and workshops organized by the organization to develop professionally and learn about how to advocate for patients, workplaces, and other issues affecting nursing practice (Williams, 2018).

Conclusion

The academic resources I plan to use during my MSN program include Walden Library, Walden University Academic Skills Center, and Online Journals, Publications, and periodicals. These resources will improve my writing skills, help me gain knowledge and research for my assignments, and various research projects. For the professional resources, I plan to use the American Psychiatry Nurses Association; American Nurses Association; and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. These organizations support my nursing and PMHNP specialty in various ways.

Dr. Morena has been practicing psychiatry for over 21 years, Dr. Morena has been mentoring students for over 10 years and I believe she will be a great mentor and a resource person to me. I came to know Dr. Morena through a mutual friend who is also a postgraduate student at Walden University. I later met Dr. Morena at a skilled nursing facility where she worked as the in house psychiatrist. Dr. Morena always remained calm, respectful and professional during crisis. I selected this professional because she has a record of selflessness when it comes to offering mentorship to students who are upcoming advanced practice registered nurses or APRNs. Dr. Morena has successfully mentored and nurtured many APRN students who are now practicing psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in different states. It is this proven record and history of nurturing upcoming scholar-practitioners that endeared me to Dr. Morena. I believe Dr. Morena will support my success in my MSN program by pointing out to me the important areas that an APRN needs to pay attention to in practice. I chose Titus specifically because of the fact that he is a past student at Walden University, a fact that makes him knowledgeable about what it takes to succeed at Walden University. As an alumni who recently graduated from Walden university and has been practicing for two years, Titus is compassionate about being the change in his environment and can offer invaluable advice concerning course expectations and strategies for success. Most importantly, his recent study as a postgraduate specialist student nurse at Walden University makes him one of the best resources for my research especially field experience. This is why I chose him to be in my success team. Learning for a postgraduate degree when one is employed and has family responsibilities is not one of the easiest things to do. Without a robust support system, therefore, one is bound to fail. Even if one’s family were to fully support them in this endeavor, they would still not make it without the support of the academic advisor. This is because it is very easy to be overwhelmed by the coursework after one has had a rough day at work. Mr. Parkes will therefore support my success in the MSN program by guiding me on the best way to achieve a student-work balance.
