In this first week of my academic journey at Walden University, I am beginning to shape the foundation for my future success, both professionally and academically. In order to be successful in life, it is important to start by having a vision of what success means to me (Prendergast et al., 2019). While we all may have different definitions of success, I understand that I do not have to navigate this path. It is crucial for me to comprehend how the Walden mission and vision align with my objectives. Their dedication to creating a diverse learning environment resonates with my values as it ensures I receive a rounded education that reflects the real world. Additionally, I acknowledge that I am not on this journey by myself. Faculty members, support teams, fellow students, and professionals in my field are all part of a community that can guide and support me throughout.

As I begin to develop my Academic Success and Professional Development Plan, I am already considering those who can play a role in shaping my path. Current practitioners and experts in my field can provide insights and mentorship (Scerri et al., 2020). Furthermore, my peers can offer support and opportunities for collaboration. According to Allana et al. (2022), building a network emerges as an aspect of this journey, and I acknowledge its significance. In summary, during this first week, I have come to realize the importance of aligning my goals with the vision and mission of Walden University and, specifically, the College of Nursing. I am thrilled to embark on this journey that I have a supportive community and abundant resources to assist me as I strive for both academic and professional accomplishments.

This week, you begin to lay the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision, which includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.

Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. This Week’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
