For this Assignment, view this week’s Quantitative Research Designs PowerPoint webinar and pay close attention to its content on the basic elements of research methods (e.g., sample, data collection, measurement, analysis). Then, be sure to review the research study by Sand-Jekline and Sherman (2014), included in this week’s resources. This assignment involves identifying and describing the strengths and weaknesses of the research method used in the Sand-Jecklin and Sherman (2014) research article in this week’s resources. Methods Used in Quantitative Research Paper.

Methods Used in Quantitative Research

Purpose of study: Sand-Jecklin and Sherman (2014) sought to quantify the quantitative outcomes of a practice change that applied a blended form of bedside nursing report. It noted that although previous researches recommended similar practice changes in bedside reporting, the recommendations were not accompanied by quantification of the outcomes. The study addressed this concern. Methods Used in Quantitative Research Paper.

Research Design The study applies a quasi-experimental pre- and post-implementation research design. This involved collecting data prior to the practice change then comparing performance to data collected after the practice change with any differences noted being attributed to the practice change. The pre-implementation period data acted as the baseline data with patient and nurse satisfaction data collected at 3 months and 13 months used to indicate the effects of the practice change.
Sample Selection Convenience sampling was applied in which nurses, patients and family members who qualified to participate in the study were recruited from the 7 medical-surgical units at the facility.
Data Collection Methods, Measures and Tools Data was collected through evaluation surveys with questions exploring the satisfaction levels of the nurses, patients and family members participating in the study.
Plans for Data Analysis Data analysis followed a step-wise process with three steps. Firstly, the survey responses were filtered for those that reflected the impact of the change. Secondly, the data was subjected to ANOVA comparisons that revealed significant differences at the different data collection periods. Thirdly, Dunnett T-3 post hoc comparisons were conducted to identify the specific differences between the data collection points.
Strengths There are three significant strengths in the research methodology applied. Firstly, the survey is relatively easily to administer and cost effective thus helping to recruit a large number of participants. For instance, 233 patients completing survey at baseline, 157 at 3 months, and 154 at 13 months. Secondly, it applies convenience sampling that is simpler to execute (Jager, Putnick& Bornstein, 2017). Thirdly, the quasi-experimental pre- and post-implementation helps in addressing the research concerns about the effect of the change in the absence of randomization (Miller, Smith &Pugatch, 2020).
Weaknesses There are three significant weaknesses in the research methodology applied. Firstly, it is inflexible and unable to conduct an in-depth analysis of the issue being studied. It is restricted to answering the questions being asked. Secondly, the convenience sample makes it difficult to generalize the results for other populations of patients (Jager, Putnick& Bornstein, 2017). Thirdly, the data is collected in a time serious without controls, and this does not protect the research from confounding effects that present contemporaneously and could have similar outcomes as the change (Miller, Smith &Pugatch, 2020).

The purpose of this assignment is to describe the research design and methodology. Please discuss the research design, the sample selection, the data collection methods, the data collection measures and/or tools, and the plans for data analysis.  Please do not focus on or include the results of the study. (Use this template and make sure to support the information that you have used in the template. Each section of the template needs to be fully developed and written well in a succinct manner.)Methods Used in Quantitative Research Paper.
