Leadership

Question 1

In the positive leadership experience, the nursing leader for the wound care team managed to have all the nurses in the team share a meal and address their differences through interacting with each other on a positive and friendly note. From this experience, it is apparent that the nursing leader possessed the leadership trait of being able to mediate in conflict and promote team cohesion. By sharing something, the rest of the nurses did not know about each one of them, they understood each other and learned how to interact with each other. A nursing leader should promote teamwork and cohesion among the teammates.Leadership Assignment Paper

In the negative experience, where all nurses in the team feared the lead nurse, the negative trait was her unfriendliness and authoritarian approach to leading the team. The lead nurse was rigid and unwilling to offer the nursing team guidance on nursing situations that required her intervention, constantly making them feel inadequate as nurses whenever they sought guidance and direction from her. This sort of intimidation is detrimental to the nursing profession because there is limited room for learning while on the job. A lead nurse should provide the team with direction to enhance the effectiveness of the team.

Question 2

To create a positive experience, the main leadership strategy used was utilizing conflict resolution skills for the team members. The colleagues were constantly blame-shifting and arguing with each other. To enhance team cohesion, the lead nurse should demonstrate conflict resolution skills, where he or she can inspire a team to work together and work out their differences. The lead nurse used the socialization strategy to enhance team cohesion among the teammates (Blais & Hayes, 2016).Leadership Assignment Paper

Question 3

A significant leadership strategy that produced the negative experience was the intimidation of the teammates by the lead nurse. The lead nurse intimidated the nurses by alluding to them as weak for asking for direction and guidance whenever faced by a complicated work situation. Additionally, she hangs a sign outside her door that read, “IF YOU MUST,” which further intimidated the nurses from contacting her whenever they needed her guidance. The lead nurse, therefore, used intimidation as an authority figure to exert dominance on her teammates (American Nurses Association, 2013). This form of intimidation undermines the nurses’ ability to perform their roles properly and provide patients with quality healthcare facilities.

Question 4

Based on these two experiences, I aspire to become a fair leader who can resolve conflict among the nurses without showing any special treatment towards anyone in the team. I aspire to become a leader who inspires team cohesion by creating opportunities for team building and social interactions such as retreats and sharing meals in social gatherings creating a relaxed atmosphere for the nurses to interact with each other and learn how to foster collaboration and cohesion. I also aspire to become a leader who inspires the team to develop by offering my unwavering guidance and support whenever they require it professionally. As a nurse leader, I should demonstrate my commitment to lifelong learning, which also includes guiding my teammates through their professional roles (Hafsteinsdóttir et al., 2019). Additionally, I aspire to participate in the nursing teams as part of the team, as opposed to exerting myself as a dominant nurse leader. Instead, participating and collaborating with the rest of the team creates a conducive working environment for everyone, as well as allows the leader to mentor the teammates in acquiring clinical knowledge and developing proper judgment (American Nurses Association, 2013).
