IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing

The Work of Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative.

The United States has the chance to change and revolutionize its healthcare system to offer affordable, seamless, and quality care that is patient-centred and accessible to all. to achieve this transformation, it requires the United States to remodel several aspects of the healthcare system particularly the nursing profession which forms the largest part of the healthcare workforce (Carman,.2020).  The report by Robert Wood Foundation offers the recommendations that will work as a blueprint to enable nurses to practice to their full extent of education and training, improve the nursing education, offer opportunities for nurses to take up leadership positions and serve as full partners in the health care efforts of improvement and finally improve data collection to facilitate workforce planning as well as policymaking.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

The committee on the Robert Wood Foundation on the future of Nursing which was held at the Institute of Medicine established a vision meant to transform the health care system. Ideally, the committee envisages a future system that will provide quality care that will be accessible to all people in the United States(Carman,.2020). Majorly, focused on promoting wellness and prevent diseases. Typically, health outcomes will be improved and compassionate care will be given across the lifespan. In this intended future, prevention and primary care are the key drivers of the healthcare system. Consequently, coordination and interprofessional collaboration will be the norm. normally, payment for health care services tends to reward value instead of volume and quality care needs to be offered at a price that is affordable to the public(Carman,.2020). The main agenda of the Robert Wood Foundation is to ensure that the United States health care system consistently responds to individual needs and its delivery is patient-centred.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

Four Key Messages that structure the IOM Report Recommendations.

The committee of IOM through its deliberations formulated four key messages that form the structure of the discussion and recommendations of the report. Firstly, nurses are expected to practice to the full extent of their training and education (Warren,.2020). Typically, nurses have tremendous potential to lead and develop innovative strategies to enhance the health care system. However, this potential has previously been limited by a variety of historical, policy, and regulatory barriers.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing. Further fragmentation of the health care system as well as high rates of turnover of nurses are other barriers to the generation of the widespread transformation of nurses(Warren,.2020). Ideally, the emergence of these barriers is a result of structural flaws in the health care system in the United States. To mitigate these challenges, the government should ensure that new graduates are employed in residency programs that are besides acute care settings.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

Secondly, nurses are required to achieve higher levels of education as well as training. For the U.S to experience changes in the healthcare system, there will be a need to have fundamental changes in nursing education both before and after the issuance of practice licenses(Warren,.2020). Having an improved education system will prepare both the current and future generations of nurses on delivery of quality and patient-centred care across the settings particularly in primary care as well as the public and community health(Warren,.2020). The education system must ensure there is a seamless transition of nurses from college to the workplace and the education system should emphasize the need for having a diverse workforce including race and gender to enable nurses to provide culturally relevant care.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

The third message is that nurses should be full partners with other health professionals in the efforts of redesigning health care in the U.S. to realize and achieve transformed healthcare, there is a need for strong leadership. Therefore, the nursing profession has an active role in producing leaders in the system(Warren,.2020). Nurses ought to be groomed to rise from the bedside to the boardroom. Thus, acting as full partners with other health professionals and physicians and remain accountable for their efforts and contributions.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

The fourth key message of the IOM report is that effective workforce planning as well as policy-making calls for better data collection as well as an advanced information structure(Warren,.2020). Ideally, to achieve a transformed healthcare system, there will need to have a balance of perspective and skills among nurse’s physicians as well as other health professionals

Role of State-Based Action Coalitions.

The need for transformation in the health care system has ignited a need for collaboration of all states’ health professionals to provide a well-coordinated, community-based, and patient-centred specialty care services. Since the release of the report, the health care system in the United States has undergone various changes that have impacted it positively (Yang et al., 2020). Also, the implementation of the recommendations has presented new opportunities as well as challenges that need to be overcome. The role of state-based action coalitions is to ensure that they are to carry out the work of the campaign at their local as well as state levels and helping the advocates of the communities such as health organizations, business, and education are building healthier communities through the inclusion of the nursing profession.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

Two Initiative by the State

The two initiatives in my state are “Johnson & Johnson Nursing, The Road to a Vaccine”. This initiative is targeted towards helping the public know and understand how the healthcare industry is working to contain and address the COVID-19 pandemic(Yang et al., 2020). Ideally, this initiative is a live educational program which is hosted every week by journalist Lisa Ling who interviews health experts, researcher, and scientists as they explore the global contribution and effort to come up with a vaccine against the virus. Secondly, there is another initiative by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) which is committed to offering tools, training as well as technical help to practitioners in the fields of substance abuse and mental health disorders.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.

Barriers to Advancement and How Nurses Overcome

The reduced practice is one of the barriers that Nurse practitioners experience in my sate whereby, an NP can only engage in one element of the practice which is regulated by a nursing body. Also, restricted practice is another challenge where an NP is only permitted to engage in only certain jurisdictions and is subjected to supervision, delegation, or even team management(Yang et al., 2020). To mitigate these barriers and challenges, nurses have started campaigns which are targeted to the government to lift the laws restricting their scope of practice and advocating for regulations that will implement and enhance the recommendations made on the IOM alongside Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on helping nurses to practice to the full extent of their training and education.IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing.
