Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Interview Summary

For this interview, I interviewed the nursing supervisor at a given hospital. The supervisor provided critical insights on the structure of the organization, her role as the supervisor, and the primary duties associated with her position. Critically, she highlighted some of the main issues seen within the facility. As mentioned, the facility experiences issues such as shortage of staff members, inadequate communication across departments, and difficulties in the implementation of technologies that would help in facilitate effective provision of healthcare. Such issues have adversely impacted how the supervisor coordinates nursing staff effectively for optimal patient outcomes. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

In addressing the issues given above, the facility within which the nurse supervisor works for implemented certain techniques including hiring of temporary staff and increasing the working hours of the staff. Also, the organization holds regular meetings within departments and provides training for effective technology use. However, the efforts have not yielded much results. Some improvements have been seen in some areas while others continue to witness persistent challenges. The supervisor mentioned that the facility has been supportive and she acknowledges the effective techniques needed to tackle the remaining problems.

When asked about interdisciplinary collaboration within the health facility, the nurse supervisor claimed that there is a general positive attitude towards it. Precisely, it was recognized that it is integral in improving patient outcomes and would be of profound essence in streamlining processes of healthcare delivery. The supervisor has been working on interdisciplinary teams and characterized her experience as valuable, but can be challenging at times due to the different priorities and barriers in communication. Nonetheless, attitudes of the organizations towards collaboration have influenced her largely. However, there is still room for improvement towards a culture characterized by collaboration and teamwork.  Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Identified Issue for Interdisciplinary Approach

From the interview with the nurse supervisor, it was clear that technology implementation was one of the barriers towards effective interdisciplinary collaboration.  The issue is significant since technology is needed to optimize patient care, enhance efficiency in workflow processes, and ensure that the health facility remains competitive. An evidence-based interdisciplinary approach would be needed to rectify the problem as it would allow for integration of different technologies to streamline processes in different departments ranging from nursing to information technology, administration and different other departments.

Change Theories and Leadership Techniques

Informing an interdisciplinary approach to the identified problem would require change theories and leadership strategies. One of the change theories is the Kotter’s eight-step model for change (Miles et al., 2023). The model helps in stating how a sense of urgency is needed alongside critical elements such as building a coalition and effectively communicating the vision. In actualizing these change, transformative leadership skills are required. Transformational leadership is needed to inspire motivation in the staff members and allow for intellectual stimulation (Iqbal et al., 2019). Through this form of leadership, interdisciplinary teams could be mobilized to ensure technological innovations are implemented and thus overcome any form of resistance. Collaborative Approaches

Literature by Alderwick et al. (2021) suggests that collaboration is needed to improve interdisciplinary teams that would help in addressing organizational issues linked to implementation of technology. Interdisciplinary tasks forces comprising of representatives from nursing, information technology, administration, and ultimate users allow for diverse perceptions that needs to be considered on the process of making decisions. Besides, Alderwick et al. (2021) recommends the implementation of regular interdisciplinary meetings allow for open communication, foster sharing of knowledge, and promotes a sense of ownership among teams. Training and resources are also needed to enhance collaboration across departments and ensure proficiency in technology use. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Interdisciplinary Plan Proposal

The selected organizational issue, based off the interview conducted prior, is staffing shortages, poor communication across departments, and challenges in trying to implement technology amicably. The issues have a profound effect on the nursing’s department to coordinate effectively hence leading to poor patient outcomes. There is a need to understand the grievous consequences ensuing from these shortcomings within the given organization. Therefore, this paper contains a proposal for improving interdisciplinary collaboration. The proposal seeks to address the challenges through an interdisciplinary intervention within the nursing department. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Objective

The primary objective of this proposal is to implement an interdisciplinary solution aimed at optimizing staffing, improving communication, and enhancing the use of technology within the nursing department. Addressing the problems would help in enhancing coordination, improving efficiency, and overall improving patient outcomes. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Questions and Predictions

There are certain research questions that will help in improving practice outcomes within the health department and facility based on the objectives. The questions are as follows:

  1. How will improving communication across departments help in improving nursing staff coordination and patient care?
  2. What strategies can be employed to help in addressing staffing shortages amicably?
  3. How can the use of technology be implemented effectively to enhance patient care?

Based on the questions above, certain predictions can be made as follows.

  1. Enhanced communication would play a profound role in improving flow of information, reducing errors, and improving collaboration among nursing staff hence leading to improved care coordination and improved patient outcomes (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper
  2. Strategies such as incentivizing recruitment, implementation of flexible scheduling, and provision of training and support are predicted to help in attracting and retaining qualified personnel hence solving the issue of staff shortage (Tamata & Mohammadnezhad, 2022).
  3. Provision of comprehensive training, soliciting of feedback from staff, and integration of the technology with existing systems would help in improving efficiency, accuracy, and quality of care provided.

Change Theories and Leadership Strategies

In implementing the proposed changes, the Lewin’s change management model would be of use as it will guide the process of change implementation. The model has several steps of change implementation, which include unfreezing current practices, implementation of interventions, and refreezing of new behaviors (Hussain et al., 2018). Through this model, the organization will foster buy-in from stakeholders and ensure successful implementation of the proposed change. At the same time, transformational leadership will be employed to inspire and empower the team members, foster collaboration, innovation, and enhance commitment towards achieving the project goals. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Team Collaboration Strategy

The interdisciplinary team consists of nursing supervisors, IT specialists, human resource staff, and frontline nursing staff. Each of these members has certain mandates and would be required to conduct certain actions hence ensuring clarity within the implementation stage. Collaborative approaches including team meetings, shared decision-making, and cross-training is needed to ensure that the team works with dedication to achieve the overall objectives of the given plan. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Required Resources

For this project, the required resources are:

Staffing needs- The staff required for the implementation of the project are additional nursing staff, IT specialists, and human resources staff is needed.

Equipment and Supplies- For the project, technology infrastructure upgrades is needed as well as training resources.

Access- in the proposed plan, access to patients, departments, and technology platforms is required.

Financial Budget- A budget of approximately $100,000 is needed that would help in catering to the expenses mentioned above and costs of implementation. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

There is a need to ensure that the plan is executed desirably to ensure that there are minimal inefficiencies, lowered patient satisfaction, and potential regulation issues hence leading to high costs and damage to the reputation of the organization.

Interdisciplinary Plan Proposal

Write a brief introduction (2 to 3 sentences) to your proposal that outlines the issue you are attempting to solve, the part of the organization in which the plan would be carried out, and the desired outcome. This will set the stage for the sections below. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Objective

Describe what your plan will do and what you hope it will accomplish in one or two succinct sentences. Also, comment on how the objective, if achieved, will improve organizational or patient outcomes. For example:

Test a double-loop feedback model for evaluating new product risk with a small group of project managers with the goal of reducing the number of new products that fail to launch. This objective is aligned to the broader organizational goal of becoming more efficient taking products to market and, if successful, should improve outcomes by reducing waste. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Questions and Predictions

For this section ask yourself 3 to 5 questions about your objective and your overall plan. Make a prediction for each question by answering the question you posed. This helps you to define the important aspects of your plan as well as limit the scope and check its ability to be implemented.

For example:

  1. How much time will using a double-loop feedback model add to a project manager’s workload?
    1. At first, it will likely increase their workloads by 5 to 10 percent. However, as the process is refined and project managers become more familiar and efficient, that percentage will decrease. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Change Theories and Leadership Strategies

For this section, you may wish to draw upon the research you did regarding change theories and leadership for the Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification assessment. The focus of this section is how those best practices will create buy-in for the project from an interdisciplinary team, improve their collaboration, and/or foster the team’s ability to implement the plan. Be sure that you are including at least one change theory and at least one leadership strategy in your explanation. Always remember to cite your sources; direct quotes require quotation marks and a page or paragraph number to be included in the citation. Another way to approach your explanations in this section is to think through the following:

  • What is the theory or strategy?
  • How will it likely help an interdisciplinary team to collaborate, implement, and/or buy in to the project plan?
    • Make sure to frame this explanation within the organizational context of the proposed plan, that is, your interviewee’s organization.

Team Collaboration Strategy

In this section, begin by further defining the responsibilities and actions that represent the implementation of the plan. One strategy to defining this is to take a “who, what, where, and when” approach for each team member. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

For example:

  • Project Manager A will apply the double-loop feedback model on one new product project for a single quarter.
  • Project Manager B will apply the double-loop feedback model on all new product projects for a quarter.

Vice President A will review the workloads of project managers using the double-loop feedback model every Thursday for one quarter.

After you have roughly outlined the roles and responsibilities of team members, you will explain one or more collaborative approaches that will enable the team to work efficiently to achieve the plan’s objective. As with the change theories and leadership strategies, you may draw on the research you conducted for the Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification assessment. However, you are being asked to give a more in-depth explanation of the collaboration approaches and look at how they will help the theoretical interdisciplinary team in your plan proposal. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Another way to approach your explanations in this section is to think through the following:

  • What is the collaboration approach?
  • What types of collaboration and teamwork will best help the interdisciplinary team be successful?
  • How is the collaboration approach relevant to the team’s needs and will it help drive success?
    • Make sure to frame this explanation in terms of the subject of the plan proposal; that is, your interviewee’s organization.

Required Organizational Resources

For this section, you will be making rough estimates of the resources needed for your plan proposal to be successful. This section does not have to be exact but the estimates should be realistic for the chosen organization. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

Items you should include or address in this section:

  • What are the staffing needs for your plan proposal?
  • What equipment or supplies are needed for your plan proposal?
    • Does the organization already have these?
      • If so, what is the cost associated with using these resources?
      • If not, what is the cost of acquiring these resources?
    • What access (to patients, departments, and so forth) is needed?
      • Are there any costs associated with these?
    • What is the overall financial budget request for the plan proposal?
      • Staff time, resource use, resource acquisition, and access charged?
        • Remember to include a specific dollar amount in your request. Interview and Interdisciplinary Issue Identification Discussion Paper

After you have detailed your budget, make sure that you explain any impacts on organizational resources that could happen if your plan is not undertaken and successful. In other words, if the issue you are try to solve through your plan proposal persists or gets worse, what will be the potential costs to the organization?

For this assessment, you will create a 2-4 page plan proposal for an interprofessional team to collaborate and work toward driving improvements in the organizational issue you identified in the second assessment.
