Ways of Knowing in Nursing
Evidence-based nursing practice involves adopting a nursing approach that offers quality, holistic care based on current knowledge and research rather than personal beliefs, advice from colleagues and traditional methods. It is based on the understanding that nurses improve their clinical practice experience and expand their knowledge by leveraging research findings in collection, processing and implementation. In essence, evidence-based nursing practice focuses on the patient as being at the heart of nursing care delivery (Harrison & Graham, 2021). Foundation For Clinical Practice Decision Assignment Paper
Evidence-based nursing practice has significant value. Its implementation helps bridge the gap between theory and practice to ensure nurses deliver innovative patient care that uses current findings. In addition to keeping healthcare practices current and relevant, evidence-based nursing practice helps promote positive patient outcomes by adopting a scientific approach that identifies, recommends and implements current practices that guarantee the best outcomes (Grove & Gray, 2022).
Besides that, evidence-based nursing practice prevents complications, thereby helping to reduce healthcare costs. It ensures that the targeted positive outcomes are achieved and preventable adverse events and outcomes are avoided, delivering effective care efficiently to reduce costs. Additionally, evidence-based nursing practice contributes to the growth of nursing science. It builds up and refines the knowledge collection that constitutes the nursing science (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). Foundation For Clinical Practice Decision Assignment Paper
Furthermore, evidence-based practice guides healthcare practices in incorporating new technologies. It identifies technologies that advance healthcare and recommends strategies for adopting them. Moreover, evidence-based practice increases nurses’ autonomy and confidence in decision-making by guiding them to adopt a scientific approach to decision-making. Also, evidence-based nursing practice helps ensure that nursing remains relevant in the midst of evolving healthcare, provides scientific support for decision-making, fosters shared decision-making, encourages lifelong learning, and enhances critical thinking (Hopp & Rittenmeyer, 2020). Nursing knowledge and evidence-based practice are influenced by history, theory and research. First, history influences nursing, as with other disciplines and professions. Nursing requires a historical knowledge foundation that is derived from systematic research and based on theory. Over the years, nursing theorists have created detailed reports of nursing medical matters, informing current nursing knowledge and practice. As a result, the conceptualizations of nursing presented as part of history have formed the basis for nursing science and guided nursing practice and education (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). Second, theory influences nursing knowledge and evidence-based practice. Nursing theories offer frameworks that give shape to the scope of nursing practice. They guide nursing practice and education, presenting a foundation for making decisions, and offering a systematic approach for developing key practice that promote quality nursing care. Theories impact what nurses do as they define the characteristics of nurses’ relationships with patients and shape their interactions. They help nurses identify who needs nursing care, articulate their actions and reasons for their actions, determine the information to collect, understand and assess health situations, make diagnoses, map out care objectives and expected outcomes, determine treatment plan, establish best practice, and select productive research areas. In addition, theories separate nursing from other disciplines and subjects. They define the unique position of nursing, explore the roles of nurses, define nursing concepts, build nursing scholarly, and clarify distinctive contributions of nursing to healthcare (Alligood, 2022). Third, research influences nursing knowledge and evidence-based practice. Nursing research involves individuals contributing various experiences and skills to the science of nursing care. It is vital to professional nursing as optimal nursing care depends on the latest research findings. Research develops nursing knowledge (Grove & Gray, 2022).
There are three main barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. First, access to adequate resources. Like any other activity, implementing evidence-based practice may require resources in the form of human and material resources. Consequently, resource availability may be a limiting factor for implementing evidence-based practice. Second, resistance from stakeholders may act as a barrier. Any change can be challenging, especially when there are norms and evidence-based practice challenges the established norms. One person alone may be unable to implement evidence-based practice, so a supportive culture is required. Third, time may be a barrier. Time is a priority within the nursing care environment. The lack of time may present as nurses could often be busy and unable to prioritize evidence-based practice. Fourth, lack of knowledge and uncertainty about evidence-based practice may be a barrier. This may include insufficient knowledge about evidence-based practice, including critiquing and appraising literature related to the clinical issues being addressed by evidence-based practice (Schmidt & Brown, 2022).
