Emerging Technology Brief Essay

ew health care innovations offer the advanced registered nurse an opportunity to apply emerging technologies in practice to improve quality and patient outcomes. For this assignment, research an emerging health care technology that you think has the potential to overcome current or emerging barriers to care. Write a 500-word brief that provides an overview of the technology, its purpose, and how it would function in a health care setting, including any ethical or legal issues that would accompany the incorporation of the technology. Discuss how this technology could improve access to care and promote patient safety and quality.Emerging Technology Brief Essay

Emerging Technology Brief

An emerging technology that is finding use in the health care industry is cloud computing. This is an on-demand availability of computer researches to include computing power and data (cloud) storage with the need for the user to actively manage the system. The technology has been generalized for describing the data centers that are available to multiple users who access them over the internet. The technology is a cost-effective solution for increasing information technology (IT) functionality and capacity while allowing the user to determine how, when and where the technology is used thus ensuring a reliable and efficient IT solution(Bhatt &Peddoju, 2016).

There are three types of cloud computing technology available to the health care industry. The first type is private cloud environment that is owned by a single organization and not shared with other organizations. It offers a controlled environment that allows the organization to access IT resources from a centralized location. Although it is an expensive option, it has the advantages of offering autonomy for customizing the storage, offering greater control over the server in terms of computing and networking components that suit the IT requirements, and improving the data security. The second type is public cloud that involves outsourcing cloud services that are accessible to other organization through the internet and on a payment model. It presents security concerns as it is used by many organizations, but offers the advantages of being easy to manage, highly reliable, cost effective, no geographical restrictions, and easy scalability. The third type is hybrid could that seeks the combined advantages of both private and public cloud. Although the communication may be conflicted, it has the advantages of enhanced security, cost effectiveness, and highly scalable and flexible (Gogia, 2019). Emerging Technology Brief Essay

The purpose of cloud computing in health care is to enable the delivery and access to computing services and resources over the internet. The technology presents virtual IT resources that include analytics, databases, networking, storage, servers, and development platforms. The technology has four main uses in the health care setting. Firstly, it is used for faster data sharing that can be leveraged to improve research activities as it helps data analytics to collect data from multiple sources while proceeding with the research activities. Secondly, it allows for real time information sharing for medical personnel, such as nurses, administrators, doctors and other health care professions, and this is important especially in times of emergencies such as disasters. Thirdly, it enables better patient care by allowing for remote interactions between patients and medical personnel, and patient monitoring. Finally, it offers high volume data storage at low costs(Saba &MCCormick, 2015). Emerging Technology Brief Essay

Although cloud computing is important for the health care industry, it presents three ethical and legal concerns. The first concern is data security as the technology allows for remote access that can be leveraged to access protected data without prior authorization. Secondly, there are third party access concerns, especially in shared cloud computing, such as multi-tenant shared clouds in which the same administration interface is used(McGonigle&Mastrian, 2018). Thirdly, it presents concerns about intellectual property rights as cloud computing exceeds the geographical and administrative boundaries thus making it unclear about the specific intellectual property rights laws that would apply. It the data is stored and used in different locations with differing rights and regulations, then there would be concerns about potential infringement pitfalls (Bhatt&Peddoju, 2016). Overall, there is greater access to large amounts of medical research and patient health data, and cloud computing is important for ensuring that the data is available and useful for medical personnel.
