Emerging/Re-emerging Viral Diseases Essay

Emerging/Re-emerging Viral Diseases Essay

As presented in this week’s readings, many individuals acquire infections in the community as well as during treatment in the hospital. As a nurse, it is important to know what is going on in the world. In addition to reading scholarly literature, reading the paper and watching the news helps to keep a nurse aware of what is going on currently. In addition, many organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) track current health trends and post updates on their websites, along with Fact Sheets to help educate, prevent, and treat new and re-emerging diseases. These Fact Sheets are made to be short and easy to read so that health care professionals and patients are more likely to read and understand the information. For this Discussion, you will examine an emerging or re-emerging disease and the nurse’s role in prevention and management of the disease. Emerging/Re-emerging Viral Diseases Essay. Locate an article in a newspaper, in a lay magazine, or on an organizational website that discusses an emerging or re-emerging infectious disease that is currently affecting your community. By Day 3 Respond to the following: Briefly summarize the article you selected and provide the reference. Then, address the following: What implications does the disease have for nursing practice? How does the emergence of this disease affect your personal practice? Why do you think that this disease is emerging/re-emerging? What is the nurse’s role in preventing and managing the impact of infectious diseases both from the patient and nurse perspective? Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Covid-19

Covid-19 is an infectious viral disease that has been newly evolved that can emerge and re-emerge. It affects the respiratory system and presents with a dry cough, difficulty in breathing, and hotness of the body. It is highly contagious and is spread from one person to another through coming into contact with droplets of an infected person (Velavan, 278). Covid-19 has emergently affected a large population that led to overcrowding of the hospitals. This affected the nursing practice negatively by increasing the workload with no increase in the workforce. It also put the nurses and other healthcare workers at risk of transmitting the disease from infected patients (Jean, 1-12). The high patient population led to a decrease in the n the hospital supplies such as protective gears and other resources that support service.

Nurses have a professional obligation to take care of the community despite the pandemic outbreak. Being the frontline fighters against covid-19 has put them at risk of contracting the disease. This has led to stigma from their and family members (1-12). It has caused them psychological stress due to separation from their loved ones during the quarantine period. Other nurses have opted to resign from work due to fear of contracting the disease. The contributing factors to the emerging and re-emerging of covid-19 are human, ecological, viral, and environmental factors. The human factor is the leading cause because of the increased urbanization, migration, and weak public system (278). Emerging/Re-emerging Viral Diseases Essay

A nurse is mandated to mitigate the disease and prevent its spread through treating infected cases, initiating strategic measures to prevent the spread of the disease, and creating public awareness to the community about covid-19. Creating awareness of covid-19 to the community enables people to practice safety measures hence reducing the spread. It also enables the government to enforce public measures that curb the spread (Green, 234-247). Strategic measures are putting on a face mask, regular hand-washing or sanitization with alcohol-based sanitizers, and maintain a social distance. Emerging/Re-emerging Viral Diseases Essay
