Culturally Competent healthcare providers adapt to the unique need of patients of backgrounds and cultures that differ from their own (Ball et al., 2019, p. 22). Cultural competence includes; understanding the meaning of the culture, being knowledgeable about different cultures, appreciating diversity, being aware of health disparities and discrimination affecting minority groups, and effectively using interpreter services when needed (Ball et al., 2019, p. 23). Case Study

M.N., a 44-year-old Filipino patient, comes to the clinic today. He started coumadin two weeks ago. He has returned to assess his INR level. The nurse practitioner (NP) notes that he is still out of range. When assessing the patient compliance, both stated he is taking medications as prescribed. He has been doing well and eating a diet rich in fish and tofu. He doesn’t understand why his medications are not working. Diversity and Health Assessment Essay

Socioeconomic

According to Domingo et al. (2018), Filipino Americans (FA) are one of the fast-growing Asian American groups in the United States. FA continues to have a higher prevalence of chronic disease and behavioral risk factors such as obesity, smoking, binge drinking, and physical inactivity. Cultural tailoring intervention can effectively reduce disparities by attracting underserved populations to health promotion programs and improving their outcomes. As an NP, we must resist forming a sense of the patient based on prior knowledge of the race, religion, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or culture and use that knowledge to help make the question asked more constructively (Ball et al., 2019, p. 29-30). Lifestyle

FA cultural values, food, caring, relationship, and family. The cultural significance of food was evidenced by its presence in all interventions. Sharing a meal is a way to foster relationships and pay homage to the past. Rejection of food when offered, even for health reasons, may strain a relationship. This poses a challenge to many FA who must change their diet due to medical reasons (Domingo et al., 2018). When assessing this patient, it is vital for the NP to note that these socioeconomic factors may impact the patient’s ability to be compliant with his choice of foods. Spiritual and Cultural

The patient religious and cultural beliefs may have an overall effect on his well-being. The Filipino people are known for their strong religious faith, in the Philippines, the majority are Roman Catholics (Canete, 2021). The NP must be aware of the reasoning behind the acts and practices of different cultures. This culture eats fish daily. Vegetables are prepared in soups or stews. The patient reports an increased intake of fish and tofu. Educate the patient to avoid making changes in the diet without talking to NP. Educate about foods that are high in vitamin K (leafy green vegetables, or vegetable oils) can make warfarin less effective, if these foods are a part of the patient diet, educate him to eat a consistent amount on a weekly basis (Sinha, 2022).
