Dimensions of the scientific method Research Paper

The scientific method allows us to pose questions, test questions, and analyze results. Through observation and research we begin to understand the world around us. Consider research you have read about or been a part of and analyze the following in one page: Was the Scientific method followed? How? What pieces were or were not part of it? (Randomization, study type, placebos, etc.) For the second part, present a research project you would like to propose in approximately one page. How can it help us learn about basic principles of behavior? Dimensions of the scientific method Research Paper. How can you use the scientific method to find and address possible problems in your research design?

Irrespective of a scientist’s discipline, scientists generally follow specific rules such as using background information to formulate ideas, using scientific theories, theoretical frameworks, and hypotheses, using reasoning and logic, and support from evidence to prepare their work. Scientists generate ideas, hypotheses, and theories that bring different patterns and connections that other researchers can test against measurements or observations. In this paper, the author discusses the scientific methods used in research and presents a research project that she would like to propose. Scientific research methods allow other researchers to review and question the presented evidence, data collection and analysis methods, and scientific findings.

Analysis of A Research

I have read research by Villar et al (2016) which is a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs (randomized controlled trials). The purpose of the research was to determine the effectiveness of various protocols for intraoral chlorhexidine for preventing VAP. This purpose was informed by the background knowledge of VAP as a common HAI (healthcare-associated infection) with high mortality and morbidity among patients admitted in critical care settings.

Villar et al (2016) strictly observed the scientific methods of researching systematic reviews.  They started by formulating a research question and explicitly used systematic methods in identifying, selecting, and critically appraising related research from randomized controlled trials that were published previously. The literature review methods used a focused clinical question with MeSH terms that were combined with Boolean search operators to identify RCT studies where patients under mechanical ventilation received oral care with chlorhexidine as the primary intervention or standard care where no chemicals or placebos were used. This does not only help to ensure the validity of the findings but also ascertains the rigor of the evidence found from past studies. Dimensions of the scientific method Research Paper. To reduce the risk of researcher bias, the researchers used two reviewers to independently screen the studies found and any disagreements were resolved through discussions with a third reviewer. The data extracted included citations, study setting, trial location, participant’s characteristics, intervention characteristics, population sample size, VAP definition, and follow-up duration. Villar et al (2016) analyzed the collected data using I2 and Cochran Q statistics. The findings were presented in tables and involved comparisons of methodological criteria and outcomes of every study.

Description of A Research Project I Would Like to Propose

I would like to propose a research project on the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to eliminate substance abuse disorder (SUD) in the long term. Substance abuse disorder accounts for more than $120 billion in healthcare-related costs and $420 billion in indirect care costs every year (McLellan, 2017). Apart from the financial implications, SUD deteriorates the quality of an individual’s health status, social, and education systems. It is gradually killing the young generation through drug-related violence, alcohol-related RTA (road traffic accidents), and drug overdoses.

Apart from the pharmacological approach used to manage SUDs, research suggests that psychotherapy approaches such as CBT can be integrated into therapy to improve outcomes. Patients with SUDs usually experience negative thoughts which are a major cause of anxiety and depression. Dimensions of the scientific method Research Paper.  To increase knowledge of the principles of behavior, this research project will discuss how to dismiss false insecurities and beliefs that result in substance abuse and teach communication skills. To address possible problems in my research design, I will formulate a focused clinical question that identifies the target population, intervention, comparison, and outcome measures.
