Quality Measures

In healthcare, measures comprise outcome, process, and structure measures that follow the Donabedian model. The outcome measures usually deal with healthcare intervention or service’s impact on patients’ status. For instance, it can represent the percentage of patients who died after surgery or the rate at which surgical complications occur within a specific healthcare institution (Winegar et al., 2018). Hence, the outcome measure acts as a gold standard during quality measurement, but in most cases, it tends to be beyond providers’ control. The importance of outcome measure is that it helps the healthcare organization formulate effective risk adjustment methods, especially those that can help reduce healthcare disparities. However, the main challenge involves obtaining and identifying resources necessary for merging and collecting data from multiple sources. Developing Process Measures in Value-Based Healthcare Essay

Process measure comprises the providers’ solutions towards improving or maintaining health for healthy and sick patient populations, like the number of patients benefiting from preventative services. Hence, the target patient population may benefit through process measures by acknowledging the appropriate medical care they need to enhance their health outcomes (Akmaz et al., 2019). However, process measure’s main challenges involve four general domains: the ability to detect an outcome difference, control and explain confounding, the outcome choice, and measure stability with specification over time.

Lastly, the structural measures provide consumers with knowledge of the healthcare providers’ efforts in terms of systems, capacity, and processes towards providing high-quality care, like using electronic medical records to enhance medical documentation and charting (Jonas & Kovner, 2019). However, the main challenge with such measures includes failure of full support in support of quality improvement through implementing processes from scratch and creating new systems that the healthcare providers may not be aware of in their processes and workflows. In conclusion, each measurement is only essential for healthcare organizations to formulate effective strategies to overcome challenges. Q. Why is it important to measure both processes and outcomes? What are the opportunities and challenges for each type of measure?
