As your EBP skills grow, you may be called upon to share your expertise with others. While EBP practice is often conducted with unique outcomes in mind, EBP practitioners who share their results can both add to the general body of knowledge and serve as an advocate for the application of EBP. In this Discussion, you will explore strategies for disseminating EBP within your organization, community, or industry. To Prepare: Review the Resources and reflect on the various strategies presented throughout the course that may be helpful in disseminating effective and widely cited EBP. Nurses and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are at the center of ensuring patient safety and delivering high-quality patient-centric care. One of the most effective strategies used by nurses and NPs to deliver quality care is evidence-based practice (EBP). However, implementing and sustaining EBP in clinical settings requires a strong foundation anchored on an organization’s philosophy, mission, vision, and objectives, and organizational culture (Gallagher-Ford, Buck & Melnyk, 2018).Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice Essay.  In this paper, the author discusses the most and least likely dissemination strategies to use to communicate EBP and potential barriers that may be encountered during dissemination. Nurses play a critical role as peer leaders in promoting EBP and developing EBP programs and clinical guidelines for best practice.

Dissemination Strategies

Poster Presentations

Poster presentations allow a researcher to summarize research projects in an aesthetic and concise format. Therefore, when done appropriately,   posters are an attractive and succinct way to share research findings with staff in meetings or conferences. Good posters can generate discussions among members of an audience. Posters are usually set up as billboards or monitor screens in strategically designated areas to reach a broad audience. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018), posters encourage a two-way exchange of information where a researcher engages with members of an audience who the similar interests as that of a researcher. Besides, they are cost-effective, less formal, and less anxiety-provoking for a presenter.

In the author’s organization, the in charge of the quality assurance department used poster presentations to inform staff about updated clinical guidelines for various clinical practices such as stepwise management of asthma,  diagnosing and managing COPD, and hand hygiene among others. However, before dissemination,  the in-charge printed a  version of the guidelines and posted it at the nursing station to be viewed by staff and each team that received the guidelines was to sign as a sign of acknowledgment and understanding the guidelines. Podium Presentations

Podium presentations provide a researcher with the opportunity to share research findings with a large audience. Members of an audience can also seek clarification of important data from a researcher and ask questions as a strategy to promote two-way feedback (Betz et al, 2018).  A perfect example of where podium presentations are used is in nursing doctoral programs. Doctoral programs provide nursing students with the opportunity to build, enhance, and refine their research, communication, and critical thinking skills before sharing project outcomes in a panel of assessors.

Dissemination Strategies That Would Be Least Inclined

The less preferred dissemination strategy by the author is the use of online modules as they require extra dedication from staff members to learn, understand, and provide feedback. However, most nurses agree to comprehend online modules without comprehensively reading the modules. As a result, staff members obtain very minimal information to implement in practice.

Potential Barriers and How to Overcome

A major barrier with poster presentations is the lack of feedback which is important in determining areas that may need changes during implementation into practice for more successful outcomes. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018), the best way to address this barrier is by having unit champions who not only advocate for the implementation of EBP intervention in practice but also help in collecting, analyzing, and communicating feedback.

When making a podium presentation, the most likely barrier to encounter is poor attendance of clinical nurse leaders and this may hinder the effective implementation of evidence-based research findings into practice. Another barrier is limited time which can prevent a presenter from disseminating more important data to an audience. To address these barriers, the scheduling of the presentations should be timed with the availability of most clinical nurse leaders.  Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice Essay.During the presentation, a presenter should allocate specific time to each component in a presentation as this will help to ensure a more accurate presentation.
