Discussion: Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice
To Prepare:
By Day 3 of Week 9
Post at least two dissemination strategies you would be most inclined to use and explain why. Explain which dissemination strategies you would be least inclined to use and explain why. Identify at least two barriers you might encounter when using the dissemination strategies you are most inclined to use. Be specific and provide examples. Explain how you might overcome the barriers you identified.
Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice
Nursing is among the crucial healthcare professionals that require thorough utilization of evidence-based practice (EBP). The use of evidence-based practice facilitates the effective and efficient delivery of healthcare services. EBP is also significant in the improvement of healthcare quality and safety thus impacting improved patient outcomes (Newhouse et al., 2007). It is therefore the mandate of healthcare professionals such as nurses to research and disseminate EBP with an aim of improving patient outcomes. Sharing of nursing knowledge, as well as evidence-based information, is imperative and beneficial since it can facilitate the implementation of beneficial healthcare programs (Melnyk, 2012). Dissemination of evidence-based practice can be achieved by employing several strategies. Disseminating EBP helps nurses and their colleagues to effectively utilize and apply the acquired evidence in a clinical setting. This paper describes different ways of disseminating EBP, the barriers that might be experienced, and ways of overcoming such barriers.
Podium presentations are the first key strategy that I would be most inclined to use. Podium presentation can be classified as a traditional way in which a person shares information concerning evidence-based practice through the word of mouth with an aim of educating the audience. Podium presentations are therefore utilized to educate the various healthcare professionals thus facilitating the dissemination of information. The information concerning evidence-based practice through podium presentation is majorly through role-playing, practical evidence, and assessment and feedback (Ost et al., 2020). Through podium presentation, the researcher is able to reach a large audience, thus delivering information concerning EBP in a systematic way. Unit-level presentations are the second most inclined strategy that I would employ. A unit-level presentation is a unique form of presentation as it contains other several forms of dissemination, such as the use of posters. The use of poster presentations is an affordable way of conveying information to other healthcare professionals in an organization. Utilizing a combination of both unit-level presentations and poster presentations is essential in explaining information concerning evidence-based practice to other members of the organization. The use of unit-level presentation ensures that the information to be conveyed is directly received by the intermediate colleagues within the same unit in a healthcare organization (Spiva et al., 2017). The use of publications in peer-reviewed journals is the least declined dissemination strategy that I would opt to utilize. Due to the nature of the journal authors’ selecting the specific EBP that can easily be implemented in an organization, the information provided by a peer-reviewed journal is mostly a trusted source of scientific information. Despite peer-reviewed journals reaching a wide range of health workers as well as sharing vast information, writing and publishing an article is expensive in terms of cost and time. A written paper can spend more than three months at the review stage, which may delay research dissemination at the expected time. Furthermore, a publication delayed as a result of the quality check may slow the processes of medical dissemination and knowledge especially when the information conveyed focuses on recent public health issues.
There are various barriers that align with the two strategies, podium presentations, and unit-level presentations. In the case of podium presentations, public speaking challenges as well as the challenge of developing new presentations are common. For instance, public speaking is not a gift for all and hence a nurse who is a poor public speaker may fail to deliver information concerning a quality evidence-based practice to their audience (Newhouse et al., 2007). Moreover, most healthcare providers fail to attend podium presentations thus making the strategy ineffective. These barriers can however be overcome through administrative support as well as organizational commitments to ensure maximum attendance of their respective staff members (Melnyk et al., 2017). Unit-level presentations on the other hand only pose a barrier of conveying information to a very small number of audiences. The unit level involves sharing of EBP information at a unit level with the immediate co-workers and not at organizational level. The barrier can however be overcome through recording of unit level presentations. The recorded information can therefore further be shared among the rest of the units thus solving the problem.
In a recap, the strategies to be used have both strengths and drawbacks and depend on the type of healthcare organization as well as the available healthcare professionals. Due to this reason, different strategies work differently in different healthcare organizations. I would therefore recommend the use of multiple strategies to increase the effectiveness of dissemination. For example, the use of a combination of both unit level presentations and poster presentations increases the effectiveness of a presentation rather than relying on strategy. However, nurses should continue putting emphasis on dissemination knowledge no matter the strategy they use. Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice Assignment
