Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study

”Emotions, Thoughts and Experiences of Diabetes Patients” a study by Yilmaz, Gun & Yaman (2019) was conducted to determine what it means for patients to cope with diabetes mellitus, to disclose the thoughts, feelings and desires of patients, and to evaluate their views on coping mechanisms regarding the illness. The research is a qualitative phenomenological study addressing the perceptions, feelings, and preferences of patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. To collect data, it used semi-structured interviews. since the evidence presented is from a single qualitative study, the study offers level V evidence. From the study, three major themes arose: encounters during the stage of diagnosis, encounters after diagnosis of diabetes, and diabetes management.Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study. The study showed that diabetes negatively impacted diabetic patients’ lives; they faced disease-related physical, social and psychological challenges; and they pursued a fatalistic approach, feeling assured that all came from God and feeling grateful to deal with those issues. Additionally, more than half of the participants reorganized their lives after being diagnosed with diabetes by engaging in physical exercises, , paying special attention to diet and nutrition, consulting their physicians, and monitoring their blood sugar. In dealing with people living with diabetes, the study recommended that nurses should implement a holistic approach.Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study.

The study aimed to fill a nursing research gap in the experience of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. The research questions were designed to collect information on the attitudes, feelings and desires of patients and to explore their perceptions and coping mechanisms concerning the disease. The study acknowledges that diabetes has a physical, mental, social and financial effect on people. Providing patients with training programs to deal with stressors that can impact the level of blood sugar will enhance the quality of life of patients. Due to the limited knowledge of coping mechanisms from the viewpoint of patients, further research is needed. The study was approved by the Mersin University Scientific Research Evaluation Committee and participants given their own consent prior to involvement. Semi-structured interviews were performed, and to achieve full disclosure, open-ended questions were used to gather data. The interviews were voice-recorded.Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study.

Data analysis involved the transcription of voice records, the integration of transcripts with observations and the entry into Microsoft Word of the transcripts. Afterwards, content analysis was performed. The accuracy of the data obtained is facilitated by all the steps involved in data analysis. The results revealed that diabetes negatively impacted the lives of patients; they encountered disease-related physical, psychological, and social issues; and they pursued a fatalistic approach, feeling assured that all things are from God and being grateful to deal with these challenges. The discussion included how providing patients with training programs to deal with stressors that can influence the level of blood sugar can enhance the quality of life of patients.Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study.

The good thing about this study is that it provides more detailed information to explain complex issue of experiences of patients living with diabetes mellitus. However, the weakness of the study is that a small sample size was used, and the study at this institution may not be the same in another institution. The study relates to evidence-based practice in that it aims to improve patient outcomes of diabetic patients while also improving the clinical practice of nurses through adoption of a holistic approach. The unique findings of this study would be that most of the participants believed that all their encounters and problems came from God. They felt that God gave them the chance to cope with those problems, and were hence grateful. Although the study was conducted in Turkey, I believe the findings would not be any different if the study was conducted in the United States.Critical Appraisal of a Qualitative Study.
