Compare and Contrast Theories
Nursing is a unique discipline and profession that has its own practice and concepts that are framed by theories. In fact, the theories help to organize nursing discipline and profession into a define scope and standards. The different nursing theory are categorized into different levels, at the top of which is grand nursing theories, which are based on complex, abstract and broad concepts (Smith & Parker, 2015). Grand nursing theories provide the larger/general framework for the ideas derived from experiences and presented in nursing as they related to the major concepts of health, nursing, environment and human beings. Examples of grand nursing theories are Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Theory, Jean Watson’s Philosophy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring, and Sister Callista Roy’s Roy Adaptation Model. These examples all offer a broad scope for addressing the different propositions and concepts that nurses are likely to encounter in everyday professional practice (Butts & Rich, 2018). In addition, they help to define nursing practice in a variety of care environments and situations based on the idealized perspectives. They are applied in professional nursing practice to present a linear focus that explains how the patient care delivery parameters can be shaped for the best care outcomes. Also, they are applicable in the current employment situation to shape the care delivery strategy in ways that align the limited resources with expected outcomes, such as matching nursing staffing with care outcomes. For instance, Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Theory is a grand nursing theory built on the concept of nursing care as being concerned with meeting self-care needs. Compare and Contrast Theories: Nursing Theories and Nursing Practice .This theory is useful for determining when to discharge a patient from an inpatient facility to continue recuperating at home (Smith, 2020). Overall, the grand nursing theories have become an inextricable part of the professional nursing practice, irrespective of the nursing specialization, as they establish the broad guidelines for nursing practice.
