Work Environment Assessment Template

Use this document to complete the Module 4 Workplace Environment Assessment.

A workplace environment assessment (WEA) is a tool that presents an opportunity to observe and explore the environment in terms of understanding the setting in which workers are engaged in an organization, as well as the factors that either support or hinder their health and wellbeing. WEA concedes that a supportive environment is important as it helps to eliminate hazards and risk thereby allowing workers to focus on workplace tasks and responsibilities with better outputs. In completing WEA, it is possible to identify and engage in conduct that improves health, wellbeing and civility, improving access to associated services, and discouraging uncivil and unhealthy behaviors (Clark, 2015). The present paper evaluates the results of a WEA and makes suggestions for improving civility and health in the workplace.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.

Summary of Results – Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory The WEA questionnaire was completed with the results showing that the organization had a score of 47. This is an indication that the organization presents an unhealthy workplace, an interpretation determined by the fact that the total assessment score is less than 50. The organization scores poorly on almost all the assessed statements except for the presence of a mentoring program, emphasis on wellness and self-care, and attracting and retaining the ‘best and brightest’ workers. However, the organization is faulted for lacking a shared vision and mission based on trust, respect and collegiality, lacking trust, personnel are unvalued, culture unassessed and not improved, and insufficient resources for professional growth and development.Communication and Relationship Building Essay. In addition, personnel treated unfairly and disrespectfully, workload is unreasonable, unmanageable and unfairly distributed, free expression discouraged, remuneration is not competitive, and organization not recommended as a good workplace. It is clear that the organization scores poorly in many areas. This has created an unfavorable organization culture that breeds incivility in the workplace. Although the organization is aware of these issues of concern, it has largely ignored them by acknowledging that although the present culture appears unfair and breeds incivility, it has been working well for the organization and making changes to the culture may not really be worth the effort and could have a negative impact on the organization (Clark, 2015).Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
Identify two things that surprised you about the results. Also identify one idea that you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed. There are two things that were surprising about the WEA results. Firstly, employees are not viewed as assets and are not valued partners within the organization. This is surprising because employees are perhaps the greatest and most important asset that the organization can have since they are not only responsible for completing their assigned tasks, but are also responsible for developing creative and innovative solutions to workplace issues. Secondly, the organization does not provide competitive salaries, benefits, compensations and other rewards.Communication and Relationship Building Essay. This is surprising since competitive remunerations are important for motivating personnel to put in their best effort. In addition, it is important for attracting the best talents.
Prior to conducting the assessment, one idea that was believed was that the organization received many suggestions from personnel on areas that required improvements, but had ignored the suggestions. This was confirmed in the assessment when it was determined that the organization is not actively engaged in shared governance, joint decision-making, and policy development, review and revision.
What do the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace? The results from WEA indicate that the organization presents a very unhealthy workplace in which personnel are not supported to pursue health and wellbeing goals. In fact, the workplace creates opportunities for incivility.Communication and Relationship Building Essay. There are concerns that personnel are largely ignored and treated unfairly so that they are not motivated to work for the organization or even encourage others to work for the organization. This is unhealthy for the personnel since the culture treats them in a disrespectful and unfair manner. This set of circumstances has created an unhealthy and uncivil workplace (Zaccagnini & White, 2017).
Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected.
Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Abdollahzadeh et al. (2017) acknowledges that workplace is a source of concern within the health care environment, and especially among nurse personnel. It disturbs nurses who endure the negative behaviors and also interferes with the care that is delivered.Communication and Relationship Building Essay. The persons who experience incivility, either as witnesses or as targets, end up suffering negative somatic, psychological, and behavioral effects. The article makes that suggestion that organization culture must support efforts to improve workplace health and civility with a focus on engaging stakeholders. It specifically notes that three stakeholders must be engaged to make the necessary changes. Firstly, nurses must be engaged to improve their knowledge and skills, communication capabilities, and complete the assigned tasks. Secondly, the organization must be engaged to assign fair workloads, support nurses, and facilitate workplace processes. Finally, the public must be engaged to improve their views towards workers and improve their knowledge of the organization.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
The concept presented in the article is applicable to the present case by showing that stakeholders should be actively engaged to develop an effective solution. The organization cannot work alone to improve workplace civility and health. All stakeholders must be engaged so that they have the right attitude and put in enough effort to support positive changes.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams. Be specific and provide examples. The organization should apply the concept presented in Abdollahzadeh et al. (2017) to engage the key stakeholders in developing and implementing policies that protect workers from unfair and disrespectful treatment. Their involvement would not only help in presenting favorable workplace policies, but would also ensure that there is enough support for the policies in terms of implementation. This would also ensure that all the key stakeholders are aware of the acceptable behaviors and conduct (Butts & Rich, 2018).Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
General Notes/Comments It is clear that the workplace environment, to include the organization culture, has implication for civility and health in the workplace. An organization that does not recognize the need for addressing civility and health concerns is likely to be undesirable for personnel, with the reverse being equally true. To address concerns about civility and health in the workplace, all stakeholders must be engaged to ensure that their support is solicited to make the right changes.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.

Discussion Post
Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment.Based on the results, how civil is your workplace?Explain why your workplace is or is not civil.
The WEA results present a score of 47, an indication that this is a very unhealthy workplace. The personnel are not well appreciated by the organization with the organization culture being unsupportive of them. The results indicate that there is a need to change the workplace culture with a focus on appreciating personnel and treating them failure. The organization appears to be aware of the workplace civility and health concerns, but is not ready to address them. The low rank is because the environment does not facilitate communication. In addition, the organization does not offer adequate support. Additionally, the personnel do not live by a shared vision and mission, with trust and respect lacking.Communication and Relationship Building Essay. The workload is not well distributed with remunerations not competitive for the responsibilities and roles that workers undertake. Based on the WEA results, it is clear that the organization is not a good workplace with low satisfaction levels (Butts & Rich, 2018). The workplace presents an uncivil environment that does not promote personnel autonomy. Improving civility would allow for favorable outcomes in the workplace, to include improve job and health outcomes (Smith, Morin & Lake, 2018).Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
Describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed?
A case of incivility was experienced with work distribution. There was some favoritism in distributing of work with the manage assigning friends and acquaintances the more desirable tasks while the less known personnel are assigned the less desirable tasks. This issue was brought to the attention of the organization’s management, but nothing was done about the issue as the organization explained that the task assignments were based on capabilities. Ultimately the task was not addressed and the issue remained as it was.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
Conclusion
One must accept that WEA is an important tool for comprehending the status of the workers in terms of civility and healthiness. In addition, one must acknowledge that low scores in the assessment present a concern as they are indicative of an unhealthy environment that does not support the workers. Every organization must make an active effort to counter the low WEA scores by engaging key stakeholders in developing and implementing policies that are targeted at creating a civil and healthier workplace for the personnel. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.

Discussion: Workplace Environment Assessment
How healthy is your workplace?
You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.
There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
