Discussion: Workplace Environment Assessment
How healthy is your workplace?
You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.
There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
To Prepare:
• Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
• Review and complete the Work Environment Assessment Template in the Resources.
By Day 3 of Week 7
Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
By Day 6 of Week 7
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by sharing ideas for how shortcomings discovered in their evaluations and/or their examples of incivility could have been managed more effectively.

Summary of Results – Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory A Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory was completed with the results presenting a score of 62. This is an indication that the workplace is mildly healthy. The organization has relatively average scores in all measures except for two in which there was exceptionally bad performance. Firstly, the organization culture is not assessed on an ongoing basis so that there have been no improvements. Communication and Relationship Building Essay. The organization culture has remained the same for a long period of time with unfair working conditions for women. Secondly, the members of the organization are not actively engage in shared governance, joint decision-making, and developing, reviewing and revising policies. This implies that they do not contribute to the decisions about the issues that affect them (Clark, 2015).
Identify two things that surprised you about the results. Also identify one idea that you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed. Two things are surprising about the results. Firstly, nurses form the single largest profession in the organization and yet they are minimally involved in decision making organs. It is surprising that physicians are routinely consulted in management decisions while nurses are largely ignored. Secondly, it is surprising that the organization’s revised charter talks of supporting affirmative action and yet there is gender imbalance in management.
Prior to conducting the assessment, it was believed that the organization had some gender biases. This was confirmed by evaluating gender distribution in the management. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
What do the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace? The results suggest that the organization is mildly unhealthy. There are concerns that the organization culture has not been revised to reflect the current circumstances. In addition, personnel are not involved in decision making or shared circumstances. The workplace has shifted towards gender balance and affirmative actions. However, this organization has not done so that women feel underrepresented. This has created an unhealthy work environment where the men feel superior to the women (Raingruber, 2017).
Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Stamarski and Hing (2015) explain that gender inequalities in the workplace – specifically the organization structures and decision making organs – creates opportunities for sexism. These inequalities emphasize the reciprocal nature of inequalities within the organization. In addition, it creates opportunities for gender biased decisions and sexist behaviors. Also, it allows for institutional discrimination in the organizational practices, processes and structures that offer a socializing context for benevolent and hostile sexism at the level of decision makers. Ultimately, we are presented with a self-reinforcing and perpetuating system of discrimination (Stamarski&Hing, 2015). Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
This concept relates to the results of the assessment by showing how the patterns of discrimination and sexism were established and perpetuated.
Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams. Be specific and provide examples. The concept presented in Stamarskiand Hing (2015) explains how patterns of discrimination are self-perpetuated within the organization. Through recognizing these patterns, the organization would be better able to make a conscious effort in addressing them and improving gender balance at all levels. This would in terms allow for change in the organizational culture, greater representation, and inclusion in decision-making (Raingruber, 2017). For instance, having more women in management reduces opportunities for sexism.
General Notes/Comments The analysis makes it clear that the organization culture has implications for health and civility in the workplace. Gender imbalance has created opportunities for uncivility by allowing for sexism. The organization must improve gender bias and allow for greater representations so that sexism is stemmed from the top management levels. Communication and Relationship Building Essay.
