Clinical Practice Guideline Essay

The selected topic is Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in adults. CDI is characterized by diarrhea and colitis. CDI is confirmed by either a positive stool test or detection of toxicity of Clostridium difficile (McDonald et al., 2018). Additionally, histopathologic or colonoscopy findings indicating pseudomembranous colitis, show the presence of CDI. CDI has become a serious health problem as evidenced by its increased incidence and severity. Therefore, prevention, correct diagnosis, and effective treatment of CDIs are essential to lower the risk for patients, reduce the spread of the infection, and also eliminate the likelihood of recurrent infections (Kukla et al., 2020). Therefore, guidelines are developed to guide the diagnosis, management, and treatment of CDI. The guidelines normally systematize the latest evidence and data and integrate the latest changes to guide the management and treatment of CDI. Clinical Practice Guideline Essay.

It was interesting to discover from the guidelines that the risk factors for the CDI include being older than 65 years, the use of antibiotics, recent hospitalization, and weak immunity. Severe cases of CDI can cause toxic megacolon, sepsis, and multiple organ failure (Sartelli et al., 2019). Spores causing CDI spread through the fecal-oral route, airborne environmental dispersal within hospitals, and hand-to-hand contact. The guidelines recommend that patients presenting with unexplained watery stools within 24 hours to have the stools tested for CDI. Currently, the first-line treatment options for severe and non-severe initial incidents of CDI include oral vancomycin and fidaxomicin (Ng, 2019). Clinical Practice Guideline Essay.
